We were lucky to catch up with Lori Jean Glass recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lori Jean, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
When I was working in the field of mental health at a treatment center, a young adult woman came to us because her family was concerned about her behavior. She had previously been to another treatment center for substance use and was now at our center due to her desperate need for a relationship, labeled as a love addict and codependent, and to manage her anxiety. When I asked her to tell me about herself, she looked at me with vacant eyes and listed her various diagnoses from her medical journey. With teary eyes, I leaned in and quietly said, “Those diagnoses may or may not be accurate. How about we start with your name? What do you want me to call you?” She began to cry, and in that defining moment, I realized the harsh truth: our industry, meant to help, was over-assessing and under-treating many people, leaving them more confused with each new label.
The mental health field faces significant challenges in accurately diagnosing and effectively treating conditions. Despite efforts to improve assessment and treatment methods, the complex nature of mental health disorders, combined with systemic issues and societal factors, leads to ongoing problems with misdiagnosis, over-assessment, and under-treatment.
There are overlapping symptoms between different disorders, a lack of training and expertise among some professionals, pressure to quickly resolve cases leading to hasty diagnoses, and reliance on patient-reported symptoms, which may be incomplete or inaccurate. Our system for treating mental health challenges is overly complicated, and when combined with the trial-and-error process of finding the right medication, the focus often shifts to symptoms rather than causes, resulting in unsustainable outcomes.
My experience with this young woman fueled my desire to create an individualized process called The PIVOT Process. This approach helps people organize their developmental parts and provides high-impact solutions for behavioral change. Outcomes matter, and I realized we needed to help people approach their mental health challenges with curiosity rather than shame from complicated labels. I knew I needed to think outside the box and find ways to empower individuals to embrace their wounds and become advocates for their own change process.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was inspired to start PIVOT due to my own profound personal experiences with trauma and relational challenges. My childhood was marked by significant loss, including the drowning of my father and the suicide of my mother, which led to feelings of abandonment, pain, and isolation. These experiences drove me to engage in self-sabotaging behaviors as a means of coping with my emotional turmoil, despite appearing successful on the outside.
Through my journey of healing, I discovered a healthier approach to relationships, which ultimately transformed my life. This newfound understanding of relational dynamics fueled my desire to help others facing similar struggles. I developed the PIVOT Process, a method designed to identify and overcome the root causes of attachment issues, enabling individuals to create healthier and more fulfilling relationships. There is safety in the structure of the process itself.
My mission with PIVOT is to empower others to and live better lives, reflecting my belief in the power of healing and personal growth.
