We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lorenzo Chavez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lorenzo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Well, my risk taking was leaving my home in Albuquerque after high school and moving away to a new city and state Denver Colorado pursue my growing passion for the arts, with a small savings and I found an inexpensive apt in Capital Hill Denver. I was getting ready to start school at the Colorado Art Insitute, I would take out student loans to attend. I landed a part time job at Sears that brought enough money to pay rent only if I had a roommate helping by sharing the rent costs.
I had no idea what it would or where it would lead to attending this school or even what my prospects would be to find work in the arts, but my heart was telling me to go forward with my dreams of being in the arts at any capacity.
Now as I look back, I was very blessed and lucky to have followed my dream and my heart. It led to me getting eventually into the fine arts, I met my love of my life, Dolores while working as a graphic artist, she has been with me during this entire
journey to pursue the arts and she has been my best fan and supported all my dreams.
I now have been a Fine Artist for over 38 years. I still love this incredible journey and find the arts more interesting now than ever.
Lorenzo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I again was very blessed and lucky to meet and find supportive people along my journey into the arts. When I was working as a graphic artist I met a client at his home to interview for a job, I was taken by his fine art collection, and we spoke about the art and artists in his collection. He offered to introduce me to one of the artists he collected. That became an important step.
The artist eventual became my very first art mentor, he took me under his wing offer me guidance and an opportunity to exhibit my work at his home and that lead to my meeting people in the Fine Art gallery business.
They the gallery directors offered me an opportunity to show my work in their art gallery which open the doors into the fine art world.
I am most proud of following my bliss for art it has always open doors where I did not know they existed, and it continues to do that by following my bliss.
I have grown to trust my inner voice and paint what speaks to me, I have a deep love and Passion for painting The American Western Landscape. The inspiring and beautiful area feeds my soul and creative spirit.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Artist need support from the public to attend exhibitions and purchase our creative efforts. Without the support of many Art Collectors, Art Galleries, Exhibition venues and Art Magazines the artists would struggle to maintain the ability to make a living and the time needed to be creative. The best we can ask is to fully support the arts and you will support the artists.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The reason I paint is to share my love of the place we live and to remind me and us of the incredible poetic beauty that surrounds us and that must be protected, treasured and lived in wisely.
