We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lorenzo Breda. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lorenzo below.
Alright, Lorenzo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
It has been a long and rewarding journey so far. I have dedicated more than half of my life to music. Initially, I immersed myself in listening to it, then I learned to play the guitar, and in recent years, my focus has shifted towards composition. My academic journey has taken me to two conservatories in Italy, where I am from, and to Berklee College of Music in Boston.
One of the best things I could have done to speed up my learning process would have been to take breaks from time to time. For a few years, I studied intensively every day without really recognizing when I needed to rest. When I finally took a break from practice, I noticed that my brain had been stuck in a loop, and I wasn’t truly absorbing all the information I was receiving.
On the other hand, I believe my passion, determination, and focus are the reasons why I am where I am today. I put passion first because I truly believe it is the most important. In the arts, passion is the driving force.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a composer for film and media, and a guitar player. I got into this industry after studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I specialized in composition for films.
My job can be both fascinating and challenging. Composers must be able to translate other people’s words into music, much like a musical Google Translate. Essential skills in this field include dedication and flexibility. I create original music for films and TV, and offer guitar lessons and music theory tutoring.
My blend of formal education and practical experience allows me to merge classical and contemporary styles. Driven by passion, determination, and a love for music, I am committed to continuous learning and growth. My goal is to inspire others through my compositions.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are two aspects that reassure me I made the right choice pursuing this career. The first is the joy others experience when listening to my music. What I appreciate most about music is its ability to transport listeners to another world, even if only for a few minutes. I believe this is one of the most powerful aspects of music. I genuinely love it when others feel the same way while listening to my compositions.
The other aspect, more personal to me, is seeing all my previous efforts finally culminate and give me the freedom to create whatever music I feel inspired to compose each day. Composers and performers spend a lot of time studying; what people see at a concert or hear in a track is just the tip of the iceberg.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
As I previously mentioned, passion is the driving force behind pursuing a career as a creative. I understand if others struggle to comprehend this choice. Everyone is different; I have been gifted with a love for music, and I decided to follow it.
What I love about this life is that you never know what’s next, and every job opportunity is also an opportunity to learn about a different music style, culture, or language. It’s an endless journey full of surprises. Of course, a ‘normal’ job provides economic stability and a better chance to make future plans, but it lacks this surprise factor. Non-creatives seek this excitement in their post-work time or on weekends, while we constantly engage with it.
When I chose this career, I wasn’t really aware of how it would be, and people around me did not really understand, as it looked like a jump into a black hole. I just decided to follow my instinct and fully embrace the journey.
