We recently connected with Lorenda Carr and have shared our conversation below.
Lorenda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
I come from a long line of entrepreneurs on both sides of my family. I grew up working in my maternal grandparents’ various businesses. This helped me understand how to treat and appreciate customers, how to manage/budget money, the importance of showing up every day because that is how you pay bills and build customer loyalty. I also learned the importance of getting to know customers and listening to their stories. I would say the pitfalls would be having to always show up even when you need a vacation. Realizing that while you may have great employees, they will never be as emotionally invested in your business as you will. Doing what “has always been done” doesn’t work in an ever-changing global economy so you can never be idol or get comfortable.
Through the years, my grandparents owned a garage (fixing cars), a fabric store, a night club for teens (before my time), a furniture rental business, and a video store. Every business was successful enough that they could raise their family and sustain themselves in retirement. They would see a need, fill it, and close it when the time was right.
Fast forward to my own entrepreneurial journey, I have owned 2 successful dance studios, a professional dance company, and now have a growing and thriving spiritual practice. I find the key to success is the willingness to grow and change with the times.
Just like my own family’s businesses, I would never expect my children to take over my businesses or keep them going when I am unable to. They do not share my vision or passion for the services I offer. My grandparents knew I was not destined to take over their businesses and that was ok. They just wanted us kids to grow up and pursue productive lives that made us happy and sustained us financially.
I believe that as a business owner, you share your passion for whatever you do with your community and make your hometown a better place. When I meet people that are from my grandparents’ town, they STILL remember how nice, welcoming, and inclusive my grandparents were. They closed their business in 1999. THAT is a legacy. This is what I strive to do in my own businesses.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In my spiritual business, I am a psychic medium, trance medium, master level tarot reader, past life regression hypnosis practitioner, multidimentional healer, creator of my own oracle card deck, spiritual teacher and mentor, host of a weekly live broadcast across all my social media platforms, and travel the country doing platform mediumship. I see my job as giving Spirit a voice and proving the continuity of life while empowering people to understand their purpose and their own full potential in this lifetime. I have worked hard to overcome my fear of talking on camera by immersing myself in content creation on social media platforms with an emphasis on TikTok where I have the largest following. I am proud to say that I do all my own marketing and continue to take classes to grow myself and my business. I even learned how to build my own website. I pride myself in being inclusive and collaborative with other practitioners. I also pride myself on giving every client an amazing experience so they get the most “bang for their buck”. I will say that I am most proud of the actual work I do with clients that leaves them feeling hopeful.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best way I have found to get new clients is by showing up and being accessible. I allow people to see who I am and what I do in a very public way. I started my journey on TikTok in 2021 by just posting informational videos that asked people to engage. Once I had enough followers (per the rules), I was able to start going live. I was doing live readings multiple times per week to show people what I could do for them. I maintained a strong platform of ethics, integrity, and education as opposed to always just trying to be a show of magic tricks. I consistently post videos and have asked people that do social media as a career to analyze my account to see where I can improve. I also participate in local events such as psychic fairs doing readings.
Beyond just social media and fairs, I find I get a lot of referals from past clients.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
For most of my life, I thought that in order to be a psychic medium, one had to actually physically SEE spirits. As it turns out, that is not true and once I realized (thanks to another practitioner) that what I was doing was in fact mediumship, I jumped in and started learning as much as I could.
I had actually been told since my early 20’s that I would be doing this work by other psychic mediums but I never believed them. I finally said to my friend that if I was meant to do this work, then spirit should show me a sign. A week later I won a free reading where the person told me I would be doing this work. I blew it off and said I need a bigger sign. Two weeks later I won a reading on the radio and the person said I would be doing this work. I told my friend “they tell everyone that!” I also said that if John Edward or Sylvia Brown told me I would be doing this work, I would have to listen because I idolized them. 2 weeks later….I got a call that I won a reading with THE John Edward. He told me I would be doing what he does. So I signed up for classes and started doing the work. 13 years later, here I am with a thriving and growing spiritual practice.
