We were lucky to catch up with Lorena Nieto recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lorena , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
“There’s a quote from the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu that I really like, which says: ‘When the student is ready, the teacher appears.’ This can be perfectly applied to this question because if I didn’t start earlier, it’s simply because I wasn’t ready.
I’m Colombian, and in Latin America, during the time I grew up, there was a limiting belief, and I dare say it’s still present, that being an artist and/or musician is basically a failure, or a path to starvation. There’s a belief that for a person to be worthwhile or successful in life, they must be at least a professional in areas like medicine, law, engineering, etc. That was one of the reasons why I studied Physiotherapy, specialized in Health Management, then did a master business administration, and many other studies. But in the end, I felt that something was missing in my life, and it was then that I heard the voice of my soul and understood that my life was music. That’s how I arrived at today, my beautiful reality, art, creation, music, writing songs. Of course, I would have liked to start earlier, but it didn’t happen because I simply wasn’t ready.”

Lorena , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
“Since I was a child, I’ve always loved music. I adored singing, writing poems, and songs. At that time, I thought it was just a hobby, until one day, that hobby turned into a beautiful reality.
I am a singer and songwriter, and I accompany myself on the piano or guitar. I have a single and an album on music platforms, and all the songs are my own. I love all musical genres, but so far, my career has leaned more towards regional Mexican music, and I don’t rule out the option of singing other genres.
On the other hand, one of my passions is writing. Being able to turn everyday life stories into songs and to make people connect through music is fascinating and healing. So, if you have a story to tell but prefer to sing it, I can help you write it, sing it, and heal with music what sometimes cannot be done with words.”

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Life is a constant learning process. From the moment we are born, we are taught to relate to others and learn from society.
As children, our parents, schools, TV, etc., everything we come into contact with, programs us to do what everyone has been doing for decades. But very few of us have been taught to first learn from ourselves. Unlearning, learning to undo what we’ve been taught, is a task we all must undertake, always looking inward instead of outward as we’ve been taught. Finding the voice of our soul and doing what we love and truly makes us happy is our responsibility.
To learn to see life in a different way, I have had to do a lot of inner work on myself, self-discovery, and healing, for which the books of Dr. Joe Dispenza and Lain García Calvo, meditations, and God, of course, have helped me a lot.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to express oneself authentically and connect with others on a deep emotional level through art. Creating something from one’s imagination and seeing it come to life can be incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, receiving appreciation and feedback from an audience who resonates with your work can be highly rewarding, as it validates the impact of your creativity and inspires further artistic exploration. Ultimately, the freedom to express, inspire, and evoke emotions through art is what makes being an artist so rewarding.
