We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Loren Sofia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Loren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My journey to where I am all started with my less-than-stellar experience with the hormonal birth control pill. I initially started taking it in my early 20s to help my skin. After years on it, it stopped working and I decided I didn’t want to be on a medication that wasn’t working anymore. But then, I experienced post-birth control syndrome, which is an amalgamation of symptoms that can come after getting off hormonal contraceptives. My skin became 10X worse and I started experiencing new symptoms (not to mention the ones I experienced while on the pill like subclinical hypothyroidism, candida, melasma, pre-diabetes, and others).
I went to three doctors: my GP, OBGYN, and dermatologist. And not one of them could offer me help except to get back on the pill or to take a different kind of hormone-altering pill. At this point, I knew the only person that could help me was myself and that I needed to take things into my own hands. And so, my journey began by self-researching, eventually joining nutritional therapy school, completing several other certifications, and now I help women take the journey from maiden to mother and grow their families every day!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My mission is to empower women and men with the tools and knowledge to optimize their fertility and wellbeing to put their best foot forward as they step into pregnancy, postpartum, and parenthood that will have positive ripple effects into future generations. My methodology is rooted in deep understanding and respect for the physiology of the body, combining the wisdom of traditional nutrition with a bio-energetic, pro-metabolic, and bio-individual approach. Through my eCourses, guides, podcasts, and coaching, I have helped hundreds of couples make the magical transition to parenthood. And my goal is to help as many couples as I can!
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Remaining curious. As a practitioner, especially in the fertility space, you are a permanent student. There is still so much to learn about human reproduction, nutrition, childbirth, etc. There is always new research coming out. You have to be on top of the newest research but also be curious as to WHY. This is the only you can truly help your clients achieve their fertility and family growth goals. Remaining curious and asking the “whys” will help your client so much more than just accepting things are the way they are.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
It’s hard to say! I don’t think that I would have found myself in the fertility space if I hadn’t experienced issues with my own fertility. Sometimes the challenges you’re dealt actually turn into your biggest passions. And I couldn’t be happier that I was led on this path to help women make the amazing transition from maiden to motherhood (for the first time or again) and grow their families. It’s been the most rewarding experience of my life.
