Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Loren Ross. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Loren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
I have a unique situation because my business was started remote.
My goal when I started my business was to work with whomever I wanted, wherever I wanted and whenever I wanted.
Obviously, I’ve had to be flexible on those rules as I’ve grown, however I’ve been fortunate that I’ve had to build processes to manage teams remote from the get go.
The biggest thing I’ve noticed is having clear processes and a solid project management platform.
This allows your employees to not feel as though they’re drowning with the work, and also allows you to keep an eye on what’s getting done and ensuring KPI’s are hit.
The days of HR and bosses breathing down their employees necks are over and if you’re worried about that you need to build more confidence in your team, or hire new employees you do trust.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey with the Digital Nomad Lifestyle began in 2015 when I found myself in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, teaching English. Initially, I studied psychology with aspirations of becoming a therapist, but I quickly became disenchanted with the field and decided to pursue my passion for travel by teaching English abroad. Despite the initial excitement of living in an exotic land and starting a business teaching English, I struggled with depression and isolation, eventually returning to the United States without a clear direction.
Back in the U.S., I faced a challenging period living on a friend’s couch and working odd jobs. My breakthrough came when I decided to pivot towards digital marketing, leveraging my background in psychology. After gaining experience through unpaid work and internships, I secured a job at a marketing firm but continued to feel unfulfilled.
The turning point in starting my business was being reprimanded for wearing a Hawaiian shirt, which prompted me to quit and start my own digital marketing business. With a focus on SEO, digital advertising & analytics for small and medium sized businesses.
Despite initial struggles and having to drive for UberEats to fund my business, my business gradually grew. Now, I am committed to a life of mental, physical, and financial health while traveling the world, sharing my journey and insights on fulfillment and happiness.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Being a control freak is not a virtue
I looked down on other business owners who just allowed employees to do what they liked, and while I still believe that work needs to be QA’d and tasks need to be finished by employees I can not micro-manage everything and get so far into the weeds on what my employees are doing, as I’ll drive myself crazy.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had zero money from anyone to start my business.
I pay my mother’s bills and my dad left when I was a kid. I had to drive for UberEats to fund my business intiitally, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If this business was handed to me I would’ve squandered the opportunity.
