We recently connected with Lord Vizion and have shared our conversation below.
Vizion, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project would be the album that I’m currently working on as we sit here and answer these questions. I’m not sure when this interview will air but the album comes out in January. The title of the album is “Just Like Water”. There are multiple meanings behind the title. One of the meanings behind it is that I am currently in a season of growth and letting things flow the way that they are purposely designed to. I think I was so caught up in the outcome of certain things that I forgot the most important thing to do as an artist is to live in the moment and to paint a picture of your “right now” instead of trying to be something you are not. In this season, I have spoken with more industry executives than ever before and in doing so I think I stopped being the artist that my fans have grown to love. With that being said, Just Like Water symbolizes the purification of the “old me” and introduces my audience to a more intentional version of myself.
Vizion, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a rapper, a poet, and also an author. I guess you can say that I am an all-around creative. The music that I create is a depiction of my life, problems that I’ve faced & my experiences. My poetry is the foundation of my creativity & it allows me to tell a specific story without the boundaries that I face in music. I was introduced to music at a young age & I was always a fan of lyricism and storytelling. The way that I got into this industry wasn’t planned because I didn’t set any intentions to become the best rapper, I was just doing it for the love of it. What sets me apart from others is my ability to be honest and vulnerable in my music. My versatility has created multiple streams of income that have set me apart from my peers. I am most proud of my perseverance, my growth, and the positive impact that I have made on my supporters. The main thing I want my potential supporters to know is that I create music that is relatable, fun, and honest.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the notion that many people listen to your music as a means to drown out whatever they are going through presently. Whether it is depression, sadness, or even grief. Music is one of the biggest healing factors that translates throughout every generation, language, and culture. I remember when I released my first album, Beautiful Music, and one of my supporters got a tattoo of some of my lyrics. As extreme as that may sound, the mere thought of my words being such an impact on their lives brings me more joy than any award could ever do. Many times as artists, we get so caught in the business side that we forget that creating memories with our supporters is the most important job that we have. THAT is how you build a solid fan base and a core support system because following industry standards can’t pay for that.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to learn was to not expect support from those you are closest to. No one is obligated to support you and no one is obligated to love your art. The work that we do as artists are to create things from our experiences and from our stories.
