We were lucky to catch up with London Whitson recently and have shared our conversation below.
London, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The Posh Writer, which is a writing coaching business, was created to help aspiring and experienced writers use their skills to create a path to financial freedom. The brand will target those who are primarily interested in journalism and public relations. Like many writers, I started in the journalism industry making little to no money. To make a decent living, I had to work other jobs like retail, tutoring, and substitute teaching. However, after years of being a struggling writer, I began landing editor roles and freelancing for PR companies and ultimately increased my income to six figures.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have worked in the journalism industry for 10 years serving in editor roles for notable magazines like Sheen Magazine and online brands like Atlanta Black Star, and xoNecole. I also contributed to well-known publications like InStyle and Haute Living and worked with many PR firms. Growing up, writing was always my favorite way to express myself. After graduating from Clark Atlanta University with a B.A. in mass media arts, I strutted into the journalism industry and never looked back. However, it wasn’t always rainbows and butterflies. I experienced many ups and downs in the industry but my consistency has helped me to get where I am today and I want to help others who are looking to achieve similar success. So, I launched my writing coaching business The Posh Writer.
With many years serving as an editor for multiple publications like news and entertainment outlet Atlanta Black Star and beloved women-interest/lifestyle platform xoNecole, I encountered many aspiring writers who needed help navigating the industry. The Posh Writer is a love letter to those who have the passion but just need a little guidance. The Posh Writer will offer 1-on-1 coaching, online courses, webinars, and digital downloads to teach writers how to craft a story, pitch, get published, and make six figures. Each medium is filled with the best industry information and tips.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What has helped me build my reputation in my market is being consistent and working my way up in the journalism industry. I also believe in not only networking up but networking across and making meaningful relationships.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
One of the books that motivated me to start my writing coaching business, The Posh Writer, is “We Should All Be Millionaires” by Rachel Rodgers. It changed my thinking about how to make money and increased my confidence in taking the big step to start a business.
