We caught up with the brilliant and insightful London Elixir a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
London, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
What an amazing question! I am happy as a business owner. I actually worked a corporate job as a software engineer for a few years before quitting to run my music business full time. I knew that job was not aligned with my true purpose. I had no passion for it and was simply using it to fund my life/business until I felt it was time to take a leap of faith into full-time entrepreneurship. There are pros and cons to having a job and running your own business. I like to say everything in life is “hard” – you just choose which “hard” you are going to deal with. It’s hard to be a business owner but it’s also hard to clock in every day to a job you hate. Which obstacle would you rather overcome? For me, the choice is simple! I’d rather bet on myself and get fulfillment everyday knowing I’m walking in my purpose.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My business is centered around music but we offer a few different services. Our main service is centered around music production. We create instrumentals which are available for artists to purchase. Our current focus is on sync licensing – which is getting music placed on TV shows, commercials, etc. It’s become one of the main sources of income for our business. We have music on BET, CBS, Hulu, Prime, Disney+, ESPN, MTV and much more. We’ve worked with clients like Got Milk and Estrella Jalisco as well. As an independent music creator, finding ways to monetize your music is key! So we also offer consultations to answer questions for people who may be interested in sync licensing but aren’t sure where to start. Not to mention, we created a film entitled “Sync or Swim” which details the process I went through to get into sync.
Additionally, I am a DJ. I currently have a residency with Apt 4B for brunch every 1st and 3rd Sunday. I also do weddings, parties, corporate events, etc. I offer various styles/genres of music and love what I do!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2022 I began getting back to back sync and ad placements for my music. It was proving to be a reliable source of income which was exciting! Going into 2023 I expected the momentum to increase. However, the was a writer’s strike in Hollywood which drastically impacted my income from sync. In that moment, I had to find another revenue stream or just give up. That’s when I decided to begin DJing. It was a great addition to my business and has proven to be a nice income stream at times when sync is spotty.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes! I wrote a book entitled, “PTO: Prayed Time Off.” It is available on my website in audio, print and eBook. It’s about my decision to quit my job to do music full time but more importantly – it’s about living in your true purpose! This is a great book to help develop a strong mindset when you are facing major life decisions.
