We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lola Frias. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lola below.
Lola, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
For years, I sat at my desk as a loan officer, helping people achieve their dreams of homeownership. The job paid well, offered stability, and made my family proud. They often reminded me how fortunate I was to have a “respectable” career that provided a steady paycheck and benefits. But deep down, I felt a persistent emptiness. I wasn’t fulfilling my own dreams—I was just going through the motions.
My passion for skincare and beauty had always been a part of me. I loved learning about treatments, experimenting with products, and helping friends feel confident in their own skin. The idea of becoming an esthetician lingered in the back of my mind, but it felt too risky. Why leave a stable career for something uncertain? And then there was my family’s opinion—they worked hard their entire lives to ensure I had security, and I knew they’d never understand why I would willingly give it up.
The turning point came one evening after work. I had stayed late, drowning in paperwork, and when I finally looked up at the clock, it was nearly 9 PM. Exhausted and uninspired, I asked myself, “Is this what I want for the rest of my life?” The answer was a resounding no. I realized that staying in this role wasn’t just draining my energy—it was suffocating my potential. That night, I decided it was time to take a leap of faith.
The transition wasn’t easy. I enrolled in esthetics school, juggling classes and assignments while still working my full-time job to save money. When I finally gave my two weeks’ notice, my father’s disappointment was palpable. I tried to explain that this wasn’t about throwing something away—it was about building something that truly mattered to me. But doubt crept in during those early days of starting over.
After graduating and obtaining my license, I faced the daunting task of opening my own studio. There were so many hurdles: finding the right location, securing funding, purchasing equipment, and marketing my services. There were days I questioned if I’d made the right choice, especially as I watched my savings dwindle. But every time a client left my studio glowing and smiling, I knew I was on the right path. Seeing the immediate impact of my work and hearing how I’d helped someone feel beautiful gave me a sense of fulfillment I’d never experienced as a loan officer.
Quitting my job as a loan officer and pursuing a career in esthetics was one of the scariest decisions I’ve ever made. It meant walking away from stability, taking on financial and emotional risks, and standing firm in my conviction despite my father’s doubts. But it also meant choosing a life of purpose and passion. Today, I wake up excited to go to work, knowing I’m building something that’s entirely my own. Taking that risk taught me that sometimes, the biggest leaps lead to the most rewarding landings.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
