We recently connected with LoKii AD and have shared our conversation below.
LoKii, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
When it comes to music recording and mixing, I honestly had to get on the internet, ya know? There weren’t any classes in middle school or high school that taught music production at this level. Then noone is really expecting it from me. I went to YouTube to learn the basics and went from there. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to afford paying others to record and mix my music for me when I started. Plus I’m a hands on guy anyway. I’d definitely say in making songs, that the Eq and compression of the vocals are the two most important things. After those are good, you can worry about the other cool effects.
From the other perspective, a big part of being a complete artist is learning the art of performing. A big part of performing is having confidence. Beyond that you have to learn the other things like timing, breath control, and coordination, but to me learning to be confident is the most important thing. The only roadblock there would be experience because sometimes it’s hard to get higher level shows starting out to allow you to truly test your abilities.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started to make music seriously my senior year in high school and Im now a senior in college. I do my own music and also record, mix and master the music of others. I’ve gotten the chance to perform at Center Stage, Furnace 41, Smith’s Olde Bar and even Georgia Tech (my college) for some pretty big shows. I love the connection I have with my core fans. We always pull off some incredible things, ya know?
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Freedom… freedom is the drive. I want to not feel restricted to the construct of necessities. I want it to be where bills are barely even a minor inconvenience… my bills, my parent’s bills, all of our bills should barely matter. Then I think I’ll feel like I’ve done what I needed to. Then again, there’s always a new goal.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s really the connection you make with your fanbase. Like doing a show and having your fans sing your song back to you like they wrote it is probably the craziest thing you can experience as an artist. Then, you also get the stories from fans about how your music changed their life. It’s amazing!
