We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lois Burnett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lois below.
Lois, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Mrs. Townsend’s Class: Magical Journeys in History is a five-book series celebrating the African American inventors who had an impact on America. The books are something I envisioned for several years. Not long ago, I was inspired to put my vision in writing. They are fun, educational, and aligned with the disciplines of a STEM education.
I wanted all children to know the roles every American played in building this great country. I believe if children are equipped with this knowledge early in life, as they grow into adulthood their attitudes will be one of inclusiveness and they will have respect for all people.
For grades 3 through 6, each book takes the students on magical journeys where the characters come to life in colorful illustrations. Carbon Filament (Lewis Latimer, inventor) introduces the students to his friends such as Lubricator Cup, Almanac, Trolley Wheel, and Seed Planter. They are excited to meet the students and share their stories on how and why they were created.
The students interact with and become a part of the story as Carbon Filament chooses a different student in each book to be keeper of the light. The light is significant as it represents the student’s desire and commitment to learning. As long as the light shines, Carbon will return with more of his friends.
A valuable aspect I wanted to include for educators are the teacher’s guides. Each book has its own guide that includes lesson planners, character education, and discussion pages (with ladder words and subject crossovers).
The stories will not only inspire and influence creativity but will serve as proof that all children can reach for the stars.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
My greatest pleasure or satisfaction from being creative is the ability to express myself through my work. The entire process starting with an idea, breathing life into it and bringing it to fruition is creativity at its’ best. The feelings you get from that final, finished product coupled with honest and sincere reactions fuels the creative juices that keeps me going.
Being creative is exhilarating. Writing is exciting. I feel like a chef, only words are my ingredients. They mold our thoughts, perceptions and ideas. Pair them with a vivid imagination and there is no end to your creativity. I can create whatever I desire.
Being in control of your vision is fun. Tapping into people’s feelings, to know that your work resonated with and truly inspired them is rewarding and satisfying.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think it is important we are aware of all the contributions everyone made to this country.
