We recently connected with Lois Bansah and have shared our conversation below.
Lois, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
As a part-time palette knife abstract artist who began this creative journey in the midst of the pandemic’s struggles in 2020, the question of timing carries a profound resonance.
Discovering the world of palette knife abstract art during such uncertain times was a beacon of solace. The pandemic’s upheaval seemed to offer an unexpected canvas for exploration and self-discovery. While the thought of starting earlier occasionally crosses my mind, I think I found art just when i needed to, when the need for creative expression was most profound. Then, in 2022, while still pursuing palette knife art, I launched a collaborative tote bag business with my sister. The time seemed coincidental, a natural extension of my artistic expression into tangible, wearable art.
While an earlier start could have set a different road, I value the way things arose, almost as a reaction to the extraordinary times we faced. Again, though unexpected, the timing has given my artistic journey depth and narrative that connect strongly throughout each piece.
Lois, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Lois Bansah, a Ghanaian living in the United States. Currently pursuing a PhD in biochemistry, my journey in science runs parallel to my passionate pursuit of creative expression through art. In 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, my scientific and art pursuits became intertwined. Although art has always been my passion, exploring new art is always an invitation to explore the confluence of art and science—a reminder that both are lenses through which we observe and make sense of our world.
My creative journey so far has transcended my individual pursuit of art as a palette knife artist. It intertwines with the inception of “TrulyToted,” a collaborative venture founded alongside her sister, Priscilla. The core essence of TrulyToted lies in the fusion of vibrant, meticulously crafted designs adorning functional tote bags, offering clients wearable art pieces that redefine personal style. Beyond just aesthetics, TrulyToted endeavors to redefine the role of art in our lives. We believe that art isn’t confined to galleries—it’s a lifestyle, an intrinsic part of every individual’s story. Our collections are carefully curated, each design speaking to the essence of individuality and self-expression.
We love to describe TrulyToted as a narrative. We are trailblazers in merging artistry and practicality, reshaping the concept of wearable art in Ghana. Our proudest achievement isn’t solely in the growth of our brand but in the vibrant community bonded by a shared appreciation for creative expression.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Art shouldn’t be limited to physical spaces; it’s a vibrant expression that transcends boundaries. Similarly, TrulyToted isn’t just about bags; it’s an ode to the uniqueness within each of us, waiting to be showcased through wearable art. As a scientist deeply dedicated to sustainability, TrulyToted is an embodiment of that commitment. We prioritize sustainable and reusable fashion, crafting eco-friendly bags designed not just to complement fashion sensibilities but also to champion environmental protection.”
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think that as a creative society, encouraging and practicing sustainability within the arts should be encouraged. This involves both big and small practices everyone can adopt in their creative journey and including promoting the use of eco-conscious materials, minimizing waste, and adopting techniques that reduce environmental impact. This not only preserves our planet’s health but also cultivates an environment where artists thrive. When eco-friendly practices are embraced and incentivized, artists are empowered to express their creativity sustainably, infusing their works with not just artistic brilliance but also a conscious effort towards making our planet a better place.
