We were lucky to catch up with Logan Williams-Gary recently and have shared our conversation below.
Logan , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I would say the biggest challenge in my industry is keeping a steady and consistent clientele. Knowing I do hair and that I’m not the only braider in Houston just makes me get a drive to make my work look better and more appealing to a certain audience. It’s like iknow one month won’t be like the last so I have to pretty much cater to or try to get the attention of a certain crowd . I have to promote myself on a certain level as well to keep my clients and also encourage them to refer me by doing that I make sure their appointment goes nice and smooth .
Logan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ever since I was about 13 years old I’ve always had a passion for doing hair it was some what of a hobby for me at first . As I got older I started having other interests in things and I was slowly just forgetting about it but I would always do my moms hair. So years go on I start indulging in the working world and I just get to a point where I would prefer to be my own boss . I was working at the hospital in food and beverage which that’s something I’ve always done but it just wasn’t something I wanted to do for the rest of my life , but I also didn’t want to quit my job so I let them fire me instead once that happened I really had no other source of income I started to lose everything my car my apartment etc and while all this was happening I still kept having faith I would find a job . So I asked myself “Logan what can you do to make and maintain a consistent revenue ?” And that’s when I said I can do hair ! I signed up for styleseat same day and got booked with my first client the following day . Mind you I was in cosmetology school as well with a child so I had to make it work . The way I perfected my craft was literally practice and YouTube I’m a self taught braider . The type of braid service I’m most popular for would be knotless braids which is where I got my name from @_knotlessbylo . My clients are the main characters to this brand without them I wouldn’t have anything they help me just as well as I help them we bond and become friends which makes the dynamic so much more of a vibe . The thing I’m most proud of is how I kept pushing I never gave up I dealt with the trials and tribulations that was thrown at me . Im forever humble and grateful for my talent I feel like I touch people not only by doing there hair but just talking to them during there appointment and relating to them .
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
To build your audience on social media as an entrepreneur you have to realize that you have to be the photographer, videographer , the lighting guy , and the poser . If you want to build your brand you have to know what works for you . What socials are you benefiting from the most and how can you appeal to the other social media platforms. When I started my business I had two Instagrams one social was doing better I gained more followers and clients just from making reels . The advice I would give would be anything pertaining to your brand I would post about it the more they see your name the Better
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Social Media is a great tool to use for building your clientele are simple getting your work out in the world .
