We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Logan Saxon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Logan below.
Alright, Logan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I could go back in time and start my career sooner rather than later, I would have still started it when I did. See, like many of us during the pandemic, I lost my job and really needed something to keep me busy and starting my crochet business did just that for me. I had always wanted to learn how crochet and if it hadn’t been for my husband (my boyfriend at the time) who got me the book that started it all for me. I never touched until those first couple weeks of quarantine, when I needed something to occupy my time. It took weeks of practice before I finally could make something and until that moment when I finally finished my first project, I was HOOKED (literally and figuratively)
Logan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Logan! I’ve always been in the creative world. I was very involved in theater since my freshman year of high school! Originally I thought I would follow the acting trail, but as soon as I got behind the scenes I was in love! I stage managed musicals all through high school, even taking one of my shows to state thespian conference, winning 3 straight superiors for my high school for the first time! It was a HUGE deal not only for me but for my school! My new dream post high school was to a stage manager. I graduated high school, trying going to college and nothing really interested me other than theater. I decided to take a year off from school- never going back after that year- I ended up working as a Dresser for multiple shows at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL and eventually joining Disney on Ice as a Wardrobe Assistant and I toured the country for two years- fixing and dressing Mickey and his friends for in costumes.
The creative bug in me kept growing. I eventually ended up at VStar Entertainment constructing costumes for: Sesame Street Live, Trolls Live, And costumes for Universal Studios Japan.
At the height of this roller coaster is when the pandemic hit and I lost everything associated with this career of mine. I still had to find a creative outlet. So that is when I started my business: Tangled in Sass Creations and it has allowed me to have my own vision on creativity, while my personal career has taken a more “stable” role. Allowing me more to focus on my small business.
As a crochet artist I create cute plushies and plants that bring some warmth to people in their daily lives. I love working collaboratively with clients in creating custom orders in any crochet project they would like done. I love getting creative with my clients, thinking outside the box is my forte.
I am most proud of my business because it’s just me! I’ve built it from the ground up. I focus on reducing and reusing as much as possible. I source from second and stores where I can and going green when sourcing my products. Ask me what goes into some of my potted plants, I’ll tell you!
I love talking about my craft and sharing stories with clients.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell through a collaborative shop in my town I currently live in: Colliope Co. I also sell a few items on Etsy. The main problem with selling through any shop but your own is the fees. As an artist you charge for your time and supply cost. Selling through these platforms has its own set of costs.
Sadly, selling through Instagram or Facebook you run into a lot of scammers trying to steal your personal information.
My current best time is looking for pop ups in my area where I am able to set up for the day and display in a tent or on a table showing the town what I sell.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Networking and Pop up events in my area.
