We were lucky to catch up with Logan Renee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Logan , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
My first coin! Let’s talk about it. Let’s be very, very clear. I went years without being paid as a creative.
When I finally decided to take styling seriously, I would intern with those in my area I admired. I worked on fashion news segments, fashion shows, and photo shoots here and there. It wasn’t until I started posting “outfits of the day” that I got noticed. I’m not much of a social media person. I probably post six times a year, but when I post, I tag my location (no, not the exact location, the area). I posted a picture of myself sitting on the steps in Silver Spring, MD. I want to say a year later, a company in Texas, The Delaney Group, reached out asking if they could use my photo for the Downtown Silver Spring campaign. Of course, I said yes. My picture was not only on e-blasts and flyers that went out to the locals but also on the wall near the shopping area. One of my dreams is to have my work on a billboard. So having my picture on the wall; of a city was big news to me.
Keep in mind that having my picture on the wall was enough for me. The check for the campaign came 30 days later after the campaign launched, and I almost quit my job. Lol. At the time, I got an 80-hour week check from allowing a company to use my picture. I couldn’t believe it! I took a picture of the payment. I made a reaction video with the check. I was so happy. I used that money to invest in my business. Two years later, I am a full-time entrepreneur.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
LR, here. I am a fashion stylist and costume designer. I started in the fashion industry by interning with people I admired. Yes, I’ve run to get coffee and lunch. I stayed late after shoots. I would eat, sleep, and breathe fashion; anything, to be in the environment. My services range from personal shopping and closet audits to being on-set of films and photo shoots. When it comes to what I do, I call myself a retail therapist. I boost the confidence of individuals who need style direction & have active lifestyles. I am proud to say I am a full-time entrepreneur. It has been one year and three months. It’s not the easier career path, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. If you need a look for a special occasion, assistance getting your closet organized, or advice on how to put clothing together, email or DM me! I got you! Your retail therapist is to the rescue.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Interviews! Find interviews on YouTube of someone you aspire to be or people doing what you want to do and watch them all. Study their journey. Listen to how they started and how they overcame obstacles. Apply what resonates with you.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Great question! Let’s start by saying give the creatives their credit. Tag them and mention them on all social media platforms when working together. If you like their work, share it. Creatives work from emotion and imagination. Respect their craft and understand that being creative is a process.
