We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Logan Kolhoff a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Logan, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Q: How did you learn to do what you do?
My brother introduced me to DJing, which opened the door to the trance music scene. I discovered I had a natural talent for mixing but quickly realized I wanted to go further by creating my own tracks. My brother was already producing, with an EP and singles under his belt, he was a huge inspiration! One cold Colorado winter day, stuck indoors, we decided to collaborate. That session led to the completion of our first track, Birds of Paradise, which was signed and released by Goa Records.
From that moment, I was determined to dive deeper into production. While I had no prior experience with DAWs, I leaned on my brother’s expertise as we combined our knowledge, bouncing ideas back and forth and teaching each other new techniques. We’ve also sought feedback from established artists, taken their master classes, and had our work critiqued by professionals. This collaborative and iterative approach has been instrumental in shaping our skills and creative processes.
Q: Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
I don’t believe learning should be rushed. In today’s fast-paced world, seekers of instant gratification do not value the process. Learning to enjoy the journey is just as important as consistency. If I could offer advice to anyone starting out—it would be to practice a little bit every day. Whether it’s working on a mix, experimenting with sound design, or analyzing tracks, small, consistent efforts lead to lasting progress.
Q: What skills do you think were most essential?
Creativity is the cornerstone of music production, but it needs to be supported by a strong ear for music and at least a basic understanding of music theory. On the technical side, mixing and sound design are critical—without polish, even the best track won’t make an impact on the dance floor or get noticed by prominent artists.
Equally important are soft skills. Being open to criticism, setting aside ego, and genuinely considering feedback can elevate your craft. Lastly, maintaining a hunger to learn and improve is vital. Complacency can stall your growth, but a commitment to lifelong learning keeps your artistry fresh and evolving.
Q: What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When I started producing, the biggest challenge was the sheer overwhelming nature of music production. The possibilities felt endless, and it was hard to know where to focus my energy. Once I decided to specialize in trance, I began consuming related content—watching videos, reading blogs, and engaging in production forums on platforms like Reddit.
The collective knowledge of the community was incredibly helpful in narrowing my focus. It taught me that asking questions and leaning on the experiences of others is one of the best ways to overcome the confusion and keep moving forward.
Logan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Beyond the music itself, one of my proudest achievements is creating the Divine Freak Collective with my brother Carson Kolhoff (EYEawake) and fellow DJ Patrick Helfer (Breathe2TheBeat).
Since our first event in February 2023, Divine Freak Collective has hosted over 17 themed warehouse parties, bringing a unique blend of music, art, and community to life. We’ve been fortunate to feature renowned artists such as Treavor Moontribe (Desert Dwellers/Dreaming Awake) and Matan Caspi (Outta Limits Records), each event is an evolution of the last, always improving and investing in our productions.
Our warehouse parties are more than just music events—they’re immersive experiences. Each event is themed, with costumes encouraged to spark creativity and fun. We create a festival-like atmosphere with a vendor village, a live painters’ gallery showcasing incredible artistry, two stages of music, and lounges where attendees can relax, recharge, and get blissed out! These elements, combined with a safe and inclusive environment, has fostered a deep connection with our community.
What sets us apart is the heart and intention behind every event. We’re often told that our warehouse parties feel like mini music festivals—there’s truly nothing else quite like them in the scene. Our goal is to create a safe space for people to enjoy music, dance, and connect with others in a way that feels authentic and memorable.
For me, Divine Freak Collective embodies what I value most as an artist: fostering connection, inspiring creativity, and building a community around the love of music and dance. It’s not just about playing tracks or hosting events—it’s about creating moments that resonate deeply with our community and leave them feeling inspired and uplifted.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
A thriving creative ecosystem requires strong community engagement. This can be attending local events, purchasing art or music directly from creators, or just sharing their work on through word of mouth and social media. These small acts of support can have a significant impact. But beyond financial or structural support, society as a whole needs to value the role of art and creativity in enriching our lives. Encouraging open-mindedness and celebrating diverse forms of expression.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, music is therapy. It’s my way of processing emotions, finding balance, and connecting with something deeper. The euphoria I feel on the dance floor—those magical, transcendent moments when the music takes over—is unlike anything else. That’s what drives me as an artist: the desire to recreate that magic and share it with others.
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing how my music impacts people. There’s nothing quite like introducing someone to psychedelic trance music, especially if they’ve never experienced it before or perhaps even had a negative perception of it. Watching their mindset shift, seeing them light up as they connect with the energy and emotion of the music—it’s an incredible feeling.
It’s a reminder of the power of music to create connection, evoke emotion, and transform perspectives. That ability to touch someone’s life, even in a small way, is what makes this journey so meaningful.
