We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Logan Fritz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Logan, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Long before I had aspirations to be a musician, I worked as a professional child actor at The Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. I learned quickly performing at The Barter that I naturally loved to entertain, and I often felt most comfortable performing and being around creative people. I never fit it in at school, and the community that I found through theatre was so welcoming and aspirational. It really gave me hope to see creative adults making a living through the performing arts.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a songwriter, singer, guitar player, and band leader. I founded my band, Fritz & Co, when I was 15 years old. The lineup has changed through the years, but the band has always been an outlet for me to combine and explore Americana, blues, rock & roll and alternative music. Growing up Bristol adjacent, the influence of traditional and Appalachian music has always been part of my psyche. I have also collaborated and done production work with other local artists, Adam Bolt, Andrew Scotchie and others. I played bass guitar with regional legends, Virginia Ground, as well as a year stint with Morgan Wade. The band played AVL Fest in Asheville in 2024. I have played Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion many times since 2014, with the band, and as a solo performer.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Particularly as a young artist, it is difficult to know when to say no. I have often shared resources, time and effort with others only to have some of those folks move forward with my work, while not necessarily including or acknowledging my efforts. Thankfully, I have also worked with many gracious and fair artists who have shown me what is acceptable, and what genuine collaboration should feel like. The music community has a more competitive vibe than the theatre community that I grew up in, and that was a learning curve for me. Recognizing those that match my energy, and with reciprocity has been really valuable for me in learning who/what to invest myself in. As an artist, your time and energy are your most valuable commodity.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal is to be able to sustain myself by solely creating and performing as a nationally touring musician. I want to expand the band’s reach, beyond my immediate region.
