We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LJ Tisdale a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, LJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
In September 2023, an opportunity arose at a holistic psychiatric practice that perfectly aligned with my passion for integrating sound healing with conventional medicine. As a musician for over 30 years, I’d always been drawn to the power of sound. But it was using sound meditation to manage my own chronic conditions that truly sparked my interest in becoming a holistic practitioner.
The practice uses sound baths, Reiki, and other methods alongside traditional therapy. I felt my experience as a musician and newfound skills in sound healing would be a valuable asset to their team. Thankfully, during the interview, they resonated with my background and my passion for helping others through sound therapy. It was incredibly fulfilling to find a role that combined my passion for music with my desire to support others’ well-being in a holistic way.
LJ, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
While I spent the first decade of my adult life working full-time in healthcare, music has always been my passion. From classical training at 8 to becoming a singer, songwriter, and DJ (known as Metronix and LJ MTX), I’ve strived to create music as a form of healing escape for myself and others. This focus on well-being led me to explore sound healing meditation for my own chronic health conditions. The positive impact sparked a new purpose – to help others through holistic practices. Today, I offer sound bath meditations and Reiki treatments, helping clients reduce stress and manage pain. What sets me apart is my ability to combine my musical background with these practices, creating a unique and deeply immersive sound healing experience. In addition to working part-time at the psychiatric practice, I am also the resident sound healer for Dusk and Willow Designs in North Beach, MD, where I host group and individual sound healing sessions.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
For two years, I battled chronic health issues that left me bedridden and struggling with cognitive fog. It was frustrating to feel unheard by some medical professionals. But I never gave up hope. In 2023, I took charge of my well-being, moved to Maryland, and found a new healthcare team. It was a turning point. With their support, we found medications that worked better for me, regained my strength, and rediscovered my creative energy. Today, I’m thriving as a sound healer and musician, living a fulfilling life by the Chesapeake Bay.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I understand on a deeper level why people come to these sound baths and reiki healing. I’ve been in similar circumstances physically and mentally and all of the classes in the world can’t teach you how to understand what someone else is going through. Some of these people are doing all they can to help themselves, seeing doctors, taking medications and that in conjunction with holistic energetic healing can be so beneficial.
