We recently connected with Lizzie Hershberger and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lizzie, thanks for joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
I learned who a victims advocate was during the time I was reporting my case. I had to wait until after my case to take training. I volunteered with a local victim service group for two years. I have continued my training to help others who are going thru the reporting and legal system. I have also expanded my work to testify as an expert on the Amish.
Lizzie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up in the most conservative Amish group that exists in southern Minnesota. I chose to leave the community at age 17. I reported my abuse to the local authorities 28 years after the fact.
One of my abusers got sentenced.
After that I took training to become a volunteer with victims advocate. I now continue to supporting victims who have chosen to go thru the legal system and have expanded to testifying as an expert on the Amish.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Compassion, honesty, good listening ears & being a trusted friend.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The best advice I ever got was to give victim the choice to choose. Choose to report or not to report their case.
Choose to live Amish or leave the community & church.
Choose to keep your story private or go public with it.
