We were lucky to catch up with Lizet Upia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lizet , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned to do what I do simply by doing it. As a child, I was involved in theater, dance, and singing at my church and school, which continued into my early teens. Much of my learning came through observation—watching people, films, and playing different roles. especially playing make believe with my sisters we did that a ton. I didn’t approach it as a formal process, but more as a form of self-expression. Play was a huge part of it—trying new things, taking risks, being curious. It wasn’t something I consciously thought of as ‘learning’; I was just being, letting my instincts guide me and allowing joy to lead the way.
Looking back, I realize that everything unfolded perfectly for me. I couldn’t have rushed the process—it happened exactly as it needed to, shaping who I am today and where I’m headed. If there’s one skill I consider essential, it’s intuition. It’s been my greatest asset, not just in acting but in any creative endeavor or even daily life. Intuition helps me connect deeply with characters, make authentic choices, and respond naturally to other actors, whether on stage or on screen.
One challenge I faced was self-tape auditions. I struggled with them, to the point where my inner critic held me back from pushing through that learning curve. In my early teenage years I’ve actually stopped going to drama school and auditioning because of my frustration with self-tapes. At the time, I saw acting on stage and filming self-tapes as two very different experiences. But in hindsight, I realize those experiences were essential for growth.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Lizet Upia, though most people call me Zet. I like to think of everyone I meet as an old friend, joining me in this journey. Creating has always been a part of my life, whether it’s through writing poetry, exploring fashion, singing or acting. Right now, my primary focus is on acting, though I’ve embraced creativity in many forms.
As a child, I was always involved in the arts, but it wasn’t until adulthood that I truly recognized myself as an artist. Acting found its way back to me during one of the lowest points in my life. It became a way for me to transform, to work through my self-consciousness and self-criticism. I love embodying different characters and reflecting on the human experience. My hope is that my work resonates with others and inspires them.
What I’m most proud of is the inner relationship I’ve cultivated with myself. That deep connection and trust I’ve built within has allowed me to be more present in my creative work. It’s something that can never be taken away—it’s my foundation. I want others to know that when you take the time to nurture your inner self, it leads you toward clarity and confidence in your purpose, which, for me, is the greatest gift.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is serving as a conduit for divine creative energy. There’s something truly special about receiving an intuitive impulse, concept, or idea and becoming the vessel through which it comes to life. Knowing that I’m entrusted with bringing that vision into the material world is an indescribable feeling—there’s nothing more fulfilling than that.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In today’s climate, society can support creatives by fostering and nurturing community. We need more talent to bring forth authentic, original art that moves the needle forward, helping humanity unite in fellowship, kindness, love, and service. Bringing forth a new vision of what we would like our world to look like. Throughout history, during times of great transformation, art has played a crucial role, often sparking a renaissance. Now, more than ever, we need a new artistic renaissance—one that envisions and showcases a world where we come together for the greater good of humanity, living in harmony and thriving on this planet and being one with earth.
