We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Liza Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Liza , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When you’ve been a professional in an industry for long enough, you’ll experience moments when the entire field takes a U-Turn, an instance where the consensus completely flips upside down or where the “best practices” completely change. If you’ve experienced such a U-Turn over the course of your professional career, we’d love to hear about it.
The biggest recent turn that I have experienced was the birth of my son, and handling the pandemic 3 months after. I never thought I would be personal training anyone virtually. I remember wondering to myself if it was even going to work, and how to replicate an “in person” experience. It was a big shift, and having a newborn was also a whole new experience. But it all worked out great! After the pandemic and going back to some in person trainings, some of my clients have stayed on as virtual as it has become an amazing tool in my business. Now, I have the backup of having a virtual session if for some reason we cannot meet in person. It also gives my clients and I more flexibility when they are traveling. Looking back, there were many moments of frustration and sadness, but I also got to spend all that time at home with my son, and I will never regret that.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Liza Scott, and I have been a personal trainer for 16 years, and have been practicing as a Registered Dietitian and Sports Nutritionist for 11 years. I work with personal training clients of all ages, mostly in a private training facility in Miami Fl, called Elite Athletes Performance. On the nutrition side, I help people improve daily nutrition patterns, improve their relationship with food, and manage stress. Over the years, my nutrition practice has changed by diving deeper into the clients relationship with food, and changing patterns and behaviors for the rest of their life, instead of just focusing on their caloric or macronutrient intake. Focusing only on the food is just too limited in making life long changes. I have to understand why my clients are making their choices, what drives them, and also what is their outlook on improving themselves as a whole. When I work with someone either for personal training or nutrition, I want potential clients to know that I am all in, in helping them be their absolute best. I truly care about their well being, and if they are willing to put in the work, they will have amazing results.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I would 100% choose the same profession. However, we are always evolving and there are so many other modalities and certifications that I would love to acquire. In 2015, I became a certified yoga instructor, and taught yoga and meditation for several years. As my family is growing, I am only doing this privately for now, but I would love to share my love for yoga, meditation, sound therapy and other modalities in the future. People are extremely busy and we are taught that the more “busy” you are, the better. But that’s not the reality, since creativity shuts down when we are always on the go. I love taking people through a beautiful flow, and seeing their entire energy shift, by slowing down, breathing, and getting in touch with themselves.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There are several books that have impacted how I manage my entrepreneurial thinking. I have learned that forcing, pushing, controlling is not the way to attract clients, or even push the business forward. I understand that I have to be in a good headspace to also give to my clients. That is huge for me. One book that changed my life after my mother had passed is called ” You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay. There is even a movie that goes along with this, that I watch at least once a year as a reminder. What we think about, we attract. Therefore I am very conscientious about my daily thoughts.
Other books I can listen/ read include “Outrageous Openness” by Tosha Silver, and “Becoming Supernatural” by Dr. Joe Dispenza,
