We were lucky to catch up with Liz Zuluaga recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Starting a new venture is always scary and involves some risk and most likely some money so deciding to go for it is a big deal! For years we both yearned to start a podcast, but it was never the “right time” for so many reasons. However, our daily conversations kept pushing the obvious. We are really good friends, we are creatives, we talk almost every day and we have a lot in common. When things align you have to listen to that. When we realized we both wanted to start a podcast it was a no brainer to do it together and we’ve never looked back.
Starting this podcast has been a risk we are SO happy to have taken. It really does feel meant to be and we’re having the best time!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The podcast was born over one of our many facetime calls while we caught up on marriage, our kids, art, our businesses and the intimate details that make up our very wanderlust selves. It hit us one day that the things we often talk about are things a lot of women (and men) could find comforting and relatable. We’ve been supporting each other so much over the years that it occurred to us these conversations could transcend to others and so here we are. Our mission with this podcast is to be a positive, energetic, warm and light weekly escape from the hardships of life.
We’re eleven episodes in at this point and have already learned so much! From how to record professional audio to the kinds of topics our listeners want to hear to how to manage this new venture along with being mothers and photographers. We’re most proud of not only our growth in such a short amount of time, but with how much our community has resonated with our candid, heartfelt conversations. We don’t hold back and try to be as honest as possible. That’s what we want our podcast to always feel like to anyone who listens.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
When we think about the mission behind our podcast the word community immediately comes to mind. Think of us as girlfriends in the room with you as we catch up and talk about all things friendship, joy, entrepreneurship and the simple joys in life. We cover topics such as skincare, beauty products we’re loving, photography, art, business tips and the real things women go through like miscarriages, pregnancy and childbirth. It’s in our nature to keep a sense of humor during the hardest of times and we can only hope that brings some levity to our listeners.
We’re not interested in being another depressing, political or celebrity interview type of podcast. We want to connect to other listeners by discussing the secret language of womanhood. That will always be our deepest mission with The Secret Life Of.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The best part of being creatives together in this medium is the connection it brings us. We’ve been friends for years, but having this new venture to engage in has been amazing. It’s been effortless, fun and full of joy. The fears we had behind starting podcasts on our own quickly dissipated once we figured out that doing it together was the answer all along.
As solopreneurs it’s been so refreshing to have something to sink our teeth into as a collective unit. We’ve never talked or laughed together this often. We find ourselves inspiring one another as we come up with new concepts, episode ideas and future dreams. It’s been a beautiful journey so far and we can’t wait to see where this takes us.
