We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Liz Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Liz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I am a wife, mom and a professional visual artist. Knowing that I needed a career that would feed my passion for creativity and give me the flexibility I craved for my growing family, I opened Liz by Design Photography, LLC in 2013. Through my love for photography, children, and artistic expression, LBDP has had the pleasure to capture life’s sweetest moments for thousands of other growing families all over the state. As a professional photographer I focus primarily on family, maternity, newborn, boudoir and lifestyle type sessions and shoot in both outdoor and indoor locations.
The Liz by Design studio is located in the heart of lovely Historic Downtown Powder Springs. The building features original brick walls from the early 1900’s, breathtaking windows and Southern charm that is unmatched. I
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I needed a career that would feed my passion for creativity and give me the flexibility I craved for my growing family, I opened Liz by Design Photography, LLC in 2013. Through my love for photography, children, and artistic expression, LBDP has had the pleasure to capture life’s sweetest moments for thousands of other growing families all over the state. As a professional photographer I focus primarily on family, maternity, newborn, boudoir and lifestyle type sessions. With that being said, there is a very special session that I felt led to create and would like to share that story in particular.
In late 2020 I felt led to create a project that I titled “Be Kind – A shining light on Diversity”. There was so much hatred, fighting and anger in the world during the time this shoot was put together and I wanted to share how special diversity really is. I decided to create a special type of session that involved children from many different races. They displayed their innocence through their natural actions with each other as they smiled, played, laughed and bonded together. The eyes of our youth are innocent and to them we are all the same.
Through this shoot I wanted to remind the world the purity of what our hearts should be. The only way I know to do that is through my lens. The session was full of love, innocence, and laughter ALL while being surrounded by people who were different. Different, but still all the same.
The project was beautiful and caught the attention of media outlets across the country. This led to multiple interviews on television, print and online media, thus achieving my goal of extending the message of diversity through kindness.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I realized fairly early on in my career that self-teaching/learning could only get me so far. In order to take things to the next level and advance my product, I needed help. I reached out to industry leaders and other professionals that offered classes and workshops in areas that aligned with my creative style.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
In the very beginning I took to Craigslist and with the guidance of a photographer friend, I purchased some affordable camera and some basic photography equipment. I had found a great deal on a bundle of items, someone had decided to sell all of their equipment. This was enough to get me started and would also let me know if this was truly the right path for me. If six months later I had a change of heart, no real big deal, just post it back to Craigslist. As fate would have it, my passion grew and as I got better at my craft I began to upgrade, one piece of equipment at a time.
