We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Liz Trevi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Liz, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Embarking on my film career has been an adventure filled with passion and discovery, and looking back, I wouldn’t have chosen to start a moment earlier. Every project, challenge, and lesson has contributed to my growth and love for this industry.
However, there are invaluable insights I wish I had known earlier in my career.
I am eager to share these learnings with those beginning their own exciting journeys. It’s a pleasure to contribute to the collective knowledge and success of fellow enthusiasts in this dynamic and rewarding field.
First and foremost, prioritizing audition technique classes over generic acting classes has proven instrumental in honing my skills.
Investing wisely in commercial headshots, rather than solely theatrical ones, has proven to be a strategic move, as they serve both purposes effectively. Additionally, realizing the pivotal role of a manager, often surpassing the importance of an agent, has been a game-changer in navigating this competitive field.
While extra work provides on-set experience, it isn’t a prerequisite for a successful film career.
Redirecting focus towards craft over appearance has yielded more profound and lasting benefits. Finally, recognizing that staying healthy is crucial, but not at the expense of neglecting one’s craft, has been a key lesson.
Reflecting on my journey, I wouldn’t alter a thing. The lessons learned, both professionally and personally, have enriched my experience in ways I couldn’t have anticipated.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Liz Trevi, a nonbinary actor driven by a passion to explore the vast artistic dimensions of the acting world. My mission extends beyond the stage and screen; I aspire to be a genuine representative of the queer community, bringing authentic and diverse narratives to audiences. With a commitment to delivering high-quality performances, I aim to not only captivate viewers but also contribute to a more inclusive and rich tapestry of stories in the realm of entertainment.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As a young queer individual, I vividly remember searching for someone on the screen who echoed my experiences and identity. Unfortunately, that representation was elusive. Now, as an aspiring actor, my goal is clear: I want to be the queer representative I longed for. I aspire to bring authentic stories to the screen that resonate with the diverse spectrum of the LGBT community, allowing individuals like me to finally see themselves reflected and acknowledged. It’s a mission rooted in the desire to make fellow queer individuals proud and to contribute to a more inclusive narrative in the world of entertainment.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A profound lesson in my journey has been the liberation of self-love, transcending societal expectations. Unlearning the rigid standards imposed by society, I discovered the empowering beauty of embracing my authentic self. The journey involved shedding the constraints of external norms and learning to appreciate and love who I am, unapologetically. This invaluable lesson has not only transformed my relationship with myself but has also become a guiding principle in navigating a world that often imposes unrealistic standards.
