Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz Stevenson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Liz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
I think in my industry innovation comes from design and it can become even more innovative when paired with sustainability. A lot of my designs are really innovative,I like to think that finding use for every piece of a textile I can or pair something really old with something new is exactly that. Some of my most loved pieces have been created by pairing fabric scraps together and realizing those pieces make something even better. For example i create these blanket cargo pants that originally where just going to be pants with no pockets, ended up having a rectangle of fabric left that I didn’t want to throw away. This piece of fabric turned into 4 cargo pockets and one of the most amazing pairs of pants I’ve ever created
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Liz Stevenson, creator of Caro Uccellino, which is a one of a kind clothing brand created out of vintage textiles. Caro Uccellino is a product of how I grew up and all the people that inspire me. I grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by my grandparents industrial sewing machines and ever since I laid my eyes on the hundreds of spools of thread they had, I knew one day I would be a fashion designer. The reason it took me so long to start sharing my ideas with the world was actually because I decided to go to college. In college I studied Marine Biology and Environmental Science which I then dropped out of with the goal of creating truly sustainable fashion, clothes out of other pieces trash. And that’s what I do, I take something old, unwanted, or even damaged and I give it a second life.
My style in the up-cycling world is very different then most, it doesn’t matter if I use the same materials as someone else my perspective and designs are very feminine but also are all still very comfortable which is hard to come by. I like to call my brands style sassy grandma because its all the prints and textiles of the 50’s-70’s but have a very modern feel, and I’m also super inspired by the fashion in those decades.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I do a lot of events like Thriftcon, MTP, and other markets which is always an amazing way to meet new customers and give people a chance to see our garments in person and even try them on. But I find that a few of our customers that have found us online through TikTok, instagram, Depop and even Pinterest and the ones that continue to follow along and are really invested in our one of a kind items. This is something I hope to have every customer become and is the reason I am always trying to reach new people and show people Caro Uccellino.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Caro Uccellino was actually funded by me nannying, after dropping out of college I wanted to find a way to travel as much as possible but also put money towards starting a brand. It all was a complete accident but I met this amazing family and was traveling with them about 4 months of the year, so I hired someone to start creating samples for Caro Uccellino. I would say the rest is history but the woman I hired never made my samples and I ended up putting everything towards me running Caro Uccellino full time. And from that point I decided to make everything one of a kind.
