Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz Myers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
After graduating from James Madison University with a degree in Exercise Science, my goal was to become a strength & conditioning coach who specialized in action adventure athletes (skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers, etc.). I moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to be able to work closer with mountain athletes and eventually began a 5 month internship with SLC Strength & Conditioning on top of the other 2 jobs I had at the time. The first day I walked in, the head coach asked me to teach him how to do a back squat and I realized that even though I had gone through all of the schooling & certifications, I knew little about coaching cues or how to effectively TEACH these specific movements. Over the next few months I observed the experts around me, wrote so many notes, and dove into all things related to training programs. I was often challenged to adapt movements for injured athletes, explain the “why” behind my programs, and organize both day to day and long term training programs effectively.
My biggest takeaways from my internship were:
A. You have to practice what you preach.
B. Master the basics before trying to go outside the box.
C. Listen. Practice. Fail. Repeat.
D. Quality Over Quantity, ALWAYS.
Liz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello!
My name is Liz & I am a sport performance coach + certified strength & conditioning specialist. I work with recreational & competitive mountain athletes who want to get strong, move pain free, & perform at their best.
After graduating with a degree in sports science, getting my CSCS cert, navigating internships, and managing a sport performance facility, I had a desire to do things my own way. I always felt that the places I worked at were missing key pieces to the puzzle of athlete wellbeing & development, so I created my own sport performance business: Mountain Edge Performance. The soul of Mountain Edge Performance is integrated training, where training programs are specific to each athlete’s physical demands, mental wellbeing, and lifestyle.
At Mountain Edge Performance, you can find remote training programs to prep for various sports such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, trail running, mountaineering, & other outdoor sports. If you play, compete, or just want to thrive in the mountains, my style of training is for you.
I am a strong believer that age is just a number and am passionate about educating people on how they can put tools & habits into place to feel good while continuing to push limits as they age.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
1000%. Since high school I knew that I wanted to help people get strong & reduce their risk for injury. I started lifting weights in high school to prep for soccer season & I still remember how great it felt to feel strong, stable, & powerful in my body. On the other side of things, I’ve seen many close friends & myself go through serious injuries. The physical & psychological toll injuries take on the body is brutal. Once I realized that, I knew I wanted to help people prevent as many injuries as possible & effectively help them through it if they did get injured. It has been very hard work but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Results. If you can’t get results for your clients, they won’t come back, and they won’t refer you to anyone else. Another huge piece is just showing up authentically & consistently. Being authentic helps people understand and believe in the process, which is needed to get RESULTS!
