We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Liz Murtagh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Liz below.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Success in e-commerce required a rapid learning curve, as its metrics differ significantly from traditional retail. While a single store can generate a solid income, significant wealth is typically only achievable through scaling a portfolio of stores, which demands exceptional management. For me, LMB Boutique is a creative outlet that synergizes perfectly with my other business ventures and personal life.
Liz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My career path has been wonderfully circuitous, with each step naturally informing the next. After beginning as a schoolteacher, my husband’s career transfers required us to move frequently. I turned this challenge into an opportunity, mastering interior design through correspondence courses with the Sheffield School, which provided a robust foundation in both design and business. I successfully launched and operated interior design firms in both Connecticut and Arizona. A subsequent move to Tampa, with two young children at home, led me to discover a passion for painting. I honed my craft through workshops and self-study, eventually selling my artwork. This diverse creative journey culminated in the 2010 founding of LMB Boutique. The dream was to bring the unique, high-quality merchandise I discovered on my travels back to my clients. Today, LMB is renowned for its curated collections, exceptional service, and an eye-catching interior that reflects our belief that true style is a personal discovery, not a passing trend.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Successful client acquisition for us is a mix of word-of-mouth, digital outreach, and a powerful in-person experience. We’ve seen that a compelling storefront is non-negotiable. Before our redesign, we were a hidden gem. Now, our exterior acts as a beacon, not only drawing people in but also signaling the quality and style they can expect inside, ensuring we attract the right clientele at first glance.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Our social media strategy was launched on Facebook and Instagram with a focus on high-quality, creative content. We prioritize beautiful, accurate photography that truly represents our in-store inventory. A key to our growth has been consistent, strategic posting between 8:00 and 9:30 AM, capitalizing on peak user engagement. We also actively fostered a community by encouraging sharing among our followers. This digital momentum was supported in-store by incentivizing customers to follow us for a discount, which effectively grew our base. Our fundamental advice is that posting is only one component of success; genuine, active engagement with your audience is what truly builds a loyal community.
