We were lucky to catch up with Liz Mendez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Liz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When I was in school to become a nail technician naming my future business was one of the first things I thought about . I knew when I got out of school and got licensed that I didn’t want to work at a salon or under anyone, so the name was really important to me. I wanted something that would fit me and also kind of say where i’m from and what it is that I do . So then 210 Nail bby came to mind and that one just stuck. Now it’ll be almost 4 years of using that name and it just fits so well so I’m happy about that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been into painting , drawing , and making things since I was young . I even went to college to become and art teacher but that didn’t quite work out for me . Moving forward I would make stickers and prints and sell them on the side , apart from my full time job at the time which was customer service . I remember working one day just thinking about how much I disliked it and I had been in that industry for 6 years it was just very mentally taxing . Being creative was always an outlet for me so I began doing my own nails and family/friends , then the idea came about what if I just dropped everything and went after this idea of becoming a nail technician and thankfully it all worked out in the end .
Something I’m most proud of is actually making this dream a reality , everyday im so grateful to be able to do what I do and make a living off of it . There was some really hard times at some points . I had to work really hard to make all of this happen , and all on my own . I’m able to provide my kids a life I never had and seeing them happy brings me lot of joy . I’m also able to make lots of connections with so many beautiful people on a daily basis , and over time forming those bonds with them is something I cherish everyday .
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My journey wasnt always smooth in the beginning . I was going to school, working part time , making deliveries for extra money and being a mom all at the same time . It was definitely a lot to handle at times , but I never once doubted myself , even when things were really tough . I just knew the if I had this idea and wanted to make these things happen that I had to push through . I didn’t want to have to go back to customer service jobs , I had been doing it for so long and it was beginning to have an impact on my mental . Being creative made me happy and I think that passion to make this dream happen is what kept me going .
How did you build your audience on social media?
I think in the start of school I automatically started my nail page because I knew that social media is how I would be getting majority of my clients . During that time I would post everyday , even if it just something I did on a mannequin hand at school. I knew I had to be consistent in posting to gain that traction online.
