Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz McVoy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Liz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The biggest risk I’ve taken was believing I could turn my side-gig into a full-time business… while pregnant with baby #2 during a pandemic. Here’s the full story:
In the midst of a whirlwind of change and uncertainty, I found myself at a crossroads – wanting more out of my career and being scared to death of the risk that came with entrepreneurship. Already a mother and working a full-time job, I had to ask myself, “Is this it?! Will you go to work, come home, barely see your kids, and be capped at a certain level then eventually retire when you’re old and exhausted? Or will you carve your own path, weather the ups and downs, and possibly build something even greater?”
Business ownership is full of risks but I craved flexibility, control over my schedule, financial independence, and most importantly, a chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
So on a cold winter day, I decided to take a leap of faith. With my toddler on one hip and my growing belly with a new life, I set up my tripod and filmed a video for social media. As I spoke about my new business, a wave of excitement and a tinge of doubt washed over me. “Who is going to care about this?” I wondered.
However, that video turned out to be one of many seeds that grew into where I am today. Despite my attire of maternity clothes and soft pants, my honest and passionate message resonated with people. It was the beginning of a remarkable adventure, one that would change my life and the lives of those around me.
Nearly five years later, what began as a side-gig for a little extra “funny money,” turned into a thriving marketing agency that fills my creative cup and leaves plenty of room to prioritize other passions in life. My work supports my family, making it easy to say “Yes!” to things like midday volunteering at school or to carve out time to pour into others through ministry, friendship, or mentorship.
One of my friends shared this quote with me, “Looking back, I would bet on myself every time.” This quote still strikes me because, as women, we so often doubt our abilities or let fear, risk, or challenges keep us from bringing our vision to life. But your fear does not have to limit you! I’m a normal person. A creative, cake-baking, mom with a passion for people and a marketing background. I don’t have some hidden skillset that makes me more likely to succeed! Anyone can find success when they’re 1) Clear about what success means to them and 2) They keep after it even through the hard times.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I own a brand marketing agency, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that helps businesses get more visible, attract customers, and increase sales through strategy, design, and video.
We help our clients gain clarity, market smarter, look amazing, and attract customers. As a full-service agency, we always begin with strategy to determine the true needs and to deeply understand the client’s audience. From there, we create multimedia solutions that elevate the company’s brand.
I’m most proud of the fact that we approach everything from a relational perspective. Data and tactics are important, but at the end of the day, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we forgot the ONE. We focus on delighting the individual, both the client we’re partnering with and the person they’re trying to reach.
I’d encourage anyone reading to ask yourself, “How do I want my customers to feel?” Then audit your website, social content, handouts, processes, services, and messaging to see if your ecosystem supports that. If not, you’ve got a problem. The good news is we can help! Reach out to our team at thelmcagency.com/contact
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
In-person meetups and networking groups. Focusing back on the individual — and the whole person, not just their work — really sets us apart as creative partners. It’s never just business! People work with those they know, like, and trust. Our job is to develop relationships first and then explore if a formal partnership would honor both of our time and resources.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
ClickUp is a huge asset for project management and client communication. We also make sure our onboarding process is personalized with the right information at the right time, personal touches, or gifts, and we always follow-through on our promises. This is huge! So many companies overpromise and underdeliver. We’re always looking for ways to surprise our clients and anticipate their needs before they have to ask.
