We were lucky to catch up with Liz Mbwambo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Liz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I have basically always done some form of marketing throughout my career. However I was no longer happy at my last job. It was no longer the place I knew and loved. I wanted to support my clients in the best way I could and I came to the reality I could not do it there. One day I jokingly told my husband that “I could just start my own marketing agency” He very seriously told me I could do it.
I slowly started to think about what I wanted my brand to feel like. I worked on my vision and mission and made sure to have a strong foundation before I got started. For about 3 months I worked on this after hours. A brand is not just a logo, it is our mission and vision. Then of course came the fun part like what CRM would I use to help me stay organized and can scale long term.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I originally started as an account manager for Staples. I really enjoyed print and selling mailers. From there I jumped into digital marketing. SEO, building websites and social media within the tourism space. My most recent was at a local cable provider selling the localized TV commercials to local businesses. There is where I learned a ton of my leadership skills and how I wanted to lead my team.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Most of my clients have been clients for 5+ years. I have been to their kids birthday parties, seen them sell their businesses and start new ones. I have seen them get married or even some with their first kids and even first grandkids! I have gone to football games with them and so much more.
I am a believer in outrageous serving. Sometimes that means going to a kids birthday party on my day off. Or simply getting lunch. If I know my clients birthdays, I send them a birthday cake. I make sure I approach every interaction with them with “how can I serve them today?”
It is all about making connections and making little deposits into that relationship.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Growing up, I was always taught that the safest and smartest path in life was to get a stable 9-to-5 job with good benefits, a solid 401(k), and the promise of eventual retirement security. My parents worked hard to provide that kind of stability, and they drilled into me the idea that a steady paycheck was the only way to ensure I’d have a good life because business is scary and “what if it fails”.
So, when I first started thinking about going into business for myself, it felt like I was doing something wrong—like I was breaking some unspoken rule. Or the possibility of failure. I kept hearing this little voice in my head saying, “What about health insurance? What about your retirement plan? What if you fail?”
But at the same time, I was feeling this pull—a deep sense that I wasn’t fulfilled, that I had ideas and value to offer the world in my own way. I realized that staying in the traditional 9-to-5 wasn’t just holding me back from doing what I loved; it was keeping me from serving people in the best way I could.
The biggest shift for me was learning to believe in myself. I had to trust that I was capable, not just of surviving without the safety net of a traditional job, but of building something meaningful. I also had to redefine what “security” meant for me. Instead of relying on a company to provide it, I had to take responsibility for creating it myself—through hard work, creativity, and putting my customers first.
Starting my own business wasn’t just about leaving the 9-to-5 behind; it was about learning to have faith in God, to step into my own power and trust that I had something valuable to offer. It was about realizing that I didn’t have to choose between doing what I love and building a stable future—I could do both, on my own terms.
