Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz Hernandez . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Liz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I’m a Mexican American Emmy-nominated television personality, journalist, Morning Show Radio Host on Los Angeles’ 94.7 The Wave and creator of WORDAFUL. My career has been built on words. I firmly believe that our power lies in the stories we tell ourselves and others. My journey took a meaningful turn when my mother lost her ability to speak due to Alzheimer’s, sparking my desire to spread positivity through the power of words.
This led to the creation of WORDAFUL, a brand that focuses on the profound impact of self-talk, self-love, and gratitude. I’m in the business of helping people feel better about themselves by harnessing the power of their own words. I also emphasize the importance of connection through storytelling.
Negative messaging often begins in childhood, and my purpose is to guide people in shifting those thoughts into positive ones. Negative messages have the power to push people away, while positive ones bring people together. I encourage my audiences to pay attention to how their words impact their lives. Negative words can hurt us, but positive words have the incredible ability to heal us
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a former Access Hollywood host, I left my television career in 2017 to create WORDAFUL, a video and live event series exploring storytelling and power of words. The shift from TV to WORDAFUL was driven by a desire for genuine connection and the realization of the importance of our language and self-talk, especially as my mother battled dementia and lost her words. WORDAFUL started as a passion project but gained traction with successful live events.
The brand has expanded into an online community membership and products.
WORDAFUL Membership offers weekly community meetups via zoom, audio meditations and affirmations, book club, playlist, podcast, journal prompts and more.
The WORDAFUL Gratitude Journal is a 3-in-1 journal that offers affirmations, gratitude prompts, intention setting exercises, and pages to journal.
The WORDAFUL Game: No Room for Small Talk: This game allows us to ask meaningful questions and make connections. Includes 130 cards.
WORDAFUL Affirmation Cards (for adults and kids) each deck has 52 cards.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2017, I made a big move – I stepped away from my role as the host on Access Hollywood. I felt grateful for my job in television, but something was missing. A family health crisis hit me hard and made me take a good look at my life.
That’s when I founded WORDAFUL, a video and live event series all about storytelling and connection. TV was great, but I needed more authenticity. My journey from TV to WORDAFUL was about seeking genuine connections and realizing how important our personal words are. My mom’s battle with dementia brought that home – watching her struggle with her words made me value them even more.
WORDAFUL began as a passion project, my way of getting back to what really mattered. The first live event was a hit, with 350 people showing up. That was the moment I knew WORDAFUL was more than just a side gig and I wasn’t alone in need for connection. It had real potential to bring people together through genuine stories. That success solidified my belief in the brand and its power to connect community.
