Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz Felgate . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I have always loved to bake. I began baking with my Mum as a child in England. I would love to help her bake all the family favorites, including scones, rock cakes, and the classic Victoria sandwich cake.
I studied at a culinary college after graduating from high school and worked in various hospitality jobs. I changed careers when I got married and my new job took me overseas to the United States, where I have lived for the last 22 years.
I began baking again for friends and family and slowly through word of mouth my customer base built. I came up with the name ‘Another Slice of Cake’ and began to move forward with my home baking business.
Over the years I have provided baked goods to several coffee shops and local businesses as well as many local customers.
When COVID hit in 2020, the coffee shop I was baking for sadly closed. I decided to pivot and started to offer treat boxes weekly which included a selection of my baked goods that could be picked up or I offered free local non contact delivery.
This was an important part of how my business grew. It kept me in business and gave me something to focus on. I built many friendships and new clients through this time too.
When the world started to go back to normal and people celebrated birthdays and events again, I was able to be the baker to provide those cakes for the people who had supported my treat boxes throughout the pandemic.
I still offer the treat boxes for special holidays including Valentines, St Patrick’s, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Halloween, and they are still very popular.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Liz Felgate and I was born and raised in Coventry, United Kingdom. I attended culinary college after graduating school and worked in a variety of hospitality industry businesses.
I’ve always loved to bake and am very creative and artistic. I’m able to combine those passions within cake decorating and creating special cakes for a variety of celebrations.
I live in beautiful Myersville, Maryland with my husband and son, and when I’m not baking I’m taking care of my menagerie of chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and cats! I’m lucky to have fresh eggs for all of my baking!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My main form of marketing is by word of mouth. I think that with a business that offers something that you eat, the best advertisement comes from someone who’s eaten it!
I get a lot of referrals from current customers and also people who were at the events and got to eat my cake or baked goods.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I use my social media platforms and daily posts to interact with my clients. I’ve built many friendships and relationships with my customers and I’m often asked by strangers if I’m the ‘cake lady’?
It’s always nice to meet people who recognize me from a post and they tell me that they follow my page!
