We were lucky to catch up with Liz Danerys Salgado recently and have shared our conversation below.
Liz Danerys, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
My photography journey started while taking many pictures of Texas landscapes. My husband and I love exploring nature, camping, and going on lots of road trips. I was fascinated by Texas’s great geographic diversity, which led to my decision to capture the places and document them on my Instagram @lizdanerys. I have always been interested in learning more about photography but had never enrolled in any formal course. As a result, I decided to buy a professional camera and take a photography class.
Two friends asked me to take pictures of them. I was so excited and obviously accepted! But I was also so nervous; it was my first time performing a photoshoot for someone else and will never forget it. I was so happy I had the privilege of spending the entire day taking their pictures. The best part was that they loved the pictures! Afterwards, they shared them on social media accounts. I was absolutely flattered to see that so many people loved the pictures. It was so encouraging to read all the beautiful comments praising the work and asking who the photographer was.
I had no idea how to start a business. However, I decided to continue pursuing my photography classes and began researching the photography profession.
I started doing sessions for my friends and publishing social media, and little by little, the clients began to arrive. This is how Prismatic Lenses was born, in May it was one year since this journey.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Liz Danerys Salgado and I’m an outdoor photographer. The work I do is known for its vibrant colors while incorporating nature’s surroundings in a creative manner.
My work includes Family, Couples, and Maternity sessions. We currently have several packages and will travel to any part of Austin and its nearby cities.
For me it is imperative to meet my clients before the photoshoots. This is important because I get to know them and understand their expectations and preferences. I like to capture spontaneous moments; so, making my clients feel comfortable in being themselves is important. I always allow my customers to see a preview of the photos and select their favorites. So far, customer reviews have been excellent, and over time, I’m hoping the number of customers will continue to grow.
Can you tell us the story of how you created your audience on social networks? Any tips for those just starting to build a social media presence?
The social media platforms I use to show my work are Instagram and Facebook. On Instagram, it is essential for me to showcase my pictures using color patters that are attractive for viewers. It’s also important to post content daily and at times that your audience is online. Another effective strategy to access larger audiences has been using hashtags and adding the session’s location. I’ve also found the stories to be useful to show the “making of” the photoshoots; and leveraging paid promotions.
On the other hand, Facebook allows me to create folders and categories my work based on the type of session (i.e. maternity, couples, family). Also, paid promotions are quite effective in Facebook because you can choose people that have interests related to photography or the session’s location. Lastly, the customer review platform has proved to be quite helpful to my business. Good ratings are very important to attract new customers.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most gratifying part of my work is seeing satisfied customers that are content with both the final product and their experience during the shoot. Being able to capture such important moments in my customers’ lives fills me with tons of joy!
