We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Liya. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Liya below.
Hi Liya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
All of my song-babies are very meaningful to me, but some of my most special projects were created this past year. I released the song “stupid for your love”, which I wrote for my then boyfriend (he proposed shortly after). I wrote SFYL with Justine Goggin and Troy Tang is the producer behind the catchy beat. One of the most meaningful projects of 2023 was also collaborating with Gregory Warfield and EndlessFilms as well as an amazing Boston-based crew to shoot the music video to “stupid for your love” completely independently. I was also so honored and happy to see that it got nominated for “Video of the Year” at the 2023 New England Music Awards. Another amazing project I worked on this past year is the single “wildwildwest.com” produced by Joseph Mossbridge and written my me, Maria Landi and Joseph. Working with these amazing and ubertalented people and bringing life both sonically and visually to my ideas always makes me proud and encourages me to keep going.

Liya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Liya, I’m a Bulgarian-born LA-based artist and songwriter. I’ve been singing since I can remember and have always known I want to be a performer and entertainer. I moved from Bulgaria to Boston at 18 to study at Berklee College of Music and during my studies I started releasing original music and performing. Though I’ve been on stage since I was 6 years old, I began my musical career as an independent artist during my time in college. Since then, I’ve released a lot of singles, music videos and have collaborated with a bunch of amazingly talented creatives both in the music filed and photo/video. I’ve also been performing on a weekly basis and have cultivated a lovely and very kind audience that supports me and reminds me why I should never stop creating music. I also love expressing myself though fashion & beauty and have always enjoyed styling myself on stage and in my music videos.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Connecting with my audience!! I’ve seen people laugh, as well as cry at my shows. I’ve met people who are on first dates, people who are going through a rough time and said my music has helped them in some way. At one of my shows in 2023 I talked to a couple who had just gotten married and they told me they came to see me perform on their first date in 2019, and then again after they got married. That melt my heart. Creating this type of connection with my audience is the reward gift as an artist.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being an artist makes you face challenges on a daily basis. I hear “no”s, have a lot of late nights, a lot of missed family time, etc. but all of these things build resilience.
