Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Livi D. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Livi , appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a child, I was always surrounded by filmmaking. I was signed onto an agency where I did child acting and modeling from the age of 2 to 12. I always enjoyed being on sets, it was a relief from the other extra circulars I did such as volleyball, ballet, orchestra, etc. When I was getting to the age where I was understanding what certain roles did on set, I became fascinated with how the productions that I worked on were made. I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge of certain roles on set when I was around the age of 6-8 where I found out what the role of a Director was.
This experience at such a young age was eye-opening for me in so many ways. I continued acting until I turned 12 and that’s when I decided that if I wanted to chase this career goal, I needed to completely focus on it. I started to write my own scripts (which are not the best at the time but I was learning) and make short films with my family’s camera. As I got older, I invested myself into internships and eventually did a trade school where I transitioned into college for filmmaking.
I’m thankful that at such a young age, I was able to experience being on set and being in a creative field. Being a Director and Screenwriter was something that I have always gravitated towards and I am so happy that I am able to continue this career. Along with that, share so many stories in the world through my lens and have the opportunity to collaborate with so many other talented minds.
Livi , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Director and Screenwriter based out in Arizona. I’ve been working in the film industry since I was 2 years old where I was a child actress and eventually moved to where I am at today. Over the past couple of years, I have directed various short films, music videos, and promotional work as well as been apart of over 20 other productions. When I interpret stories to be shown to audiences, I get fully indulged into the world, characters, and overall aspects of the production that I am creating with my team. With my work, I love combining the gap between what is defined as “real” and what can be “imaginary” or even “surreal”.
When audiences experience my work, I want them to be impacted by it in some way or another. By this, I mean either if they loved or disliked it, they can left with a feeling or even have it linger on their mind. I hope that individuals who do see my work connect with it in an emotional way and are influenced by the art that I have to show the world. To those who have/will see my work, I hope you are entertained and enjoy the stories that I produce.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Finding what’s most rewarding as a filmmaker in my position is a question that could be answered in a number of ways. In this career, there are so many countless aspects that make what I love doing so gratifying. One of the most rewarding aspect is having others inspired or even influenced by my work. This could be anyone from a member of my crew to an audience member watching my films. I love having the opportunity to have a positive affect on others especially creatively speaking. It’s something that keeps me going in my career and pushes me even further to hone in on my craft and stay inspired.
There are so many other rewarding aspects of being a creative. I am most gracious for being able to do what I love as my career and getting to collaborate with so many talented individuals. It’s so illuminating and surreal that I am in a position where I can distribute my artistic visions to audiences. That for me is the most rewarding aspect of being a filmmaker.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In any creative field rather it be from music to filmmaking, the best way to support all of us artists is to check out our work. For filmmaking in particular, go to film festivals, check out new films rather it be via YouTube or at your local theater and keep yourself involved. Films are a medium that reflect our world, our history and serves so much more than entertainment. I see films as almost a capstone that contains information about how a certain time period was like with their underlying themes or even emotions brought through what is being projected.
Beyond films, art in all its aspect is so important in our world. It’s apart of our human nature and metaphorically depicts how we’ve grown through centuries. That is why I think it is so important to not only support local or non local artists but to keep the survival of an artistic world.
