We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Liv Rylan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Liv below.
Liv , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Though I’ve been working towards my creative career for the majority of my life, it is very easy to feel “behind” no matter how young you are. Especially in the music industry, it’s very hard not to compare your trajectory to other artists, smaller or not. It’s a double-edged sword of young artists having access to the most resources & opportunity they ever have and the market becoming oversaturated and feeling lost because of it. This is something that I struggle with every day as a smaller, independent artist but I continue to remind myself that the universe’s timing hasn’t failed me yet and that everyone really is perfectly placed as they are right now. Everything that is meant for me will come to me and I take great comfort in that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Liv Rylan, a 23 year old singer-songwriter and actress currently based in Salt Lake City, UT. I’ve been singing and performing my whole life and knew from a very young age that this is what I wanted to pursue in life. I’ve been performing professionally since I was 14 when I started playing shows with Cedar City jazz band Wilhelm. I went on to earn my degree in theatre from Southern Utah University and moved to SLC to make as much art as I can before tackling an even bigger city. I’m currently in the studio working on my second EP, getting ready to release my next single Girl Crush, and in pre-production for the music video for my song Hymn. All while auditioning for different projects and collaborating on some lovely films with the community here.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I’m really grateful to have been inspired by so many amazing creators, bodies of work, and content over the years. I want to take this opportunity to share a few tools that are currently inspiring me and that I’ve found to be encouraging and useful for upcoming artists:
1. House of Herby Podcast
A creative living podcast hosted by Qveen Herby & Jedi Nick (formerly Karmin) who talk all things creative process, finding your life’s purpose, spirituality, mindfulness, & most importantly beads. You guys, I don’t have enough good things to say about this podcast and I look forward to it every week! Qveen & Jedi’s heart and humor is the answer and it’s so lovely to get an insight into their music-making process and thoughts on living a creative life.
We need your art.
2. SubmitHub
This site is such a helpful tool/resource for independent music artists in particular! For a few dollars you can submit any of your released & unreleased music for feedback and if well received, a spot on a popular music blog or Spotify playlist! This is a great platform for receiving honest feedback on your work from music curators and getting your music in front of more fans!
3. Pinterest
I’m a Pinterest fiend. A little Pinterest goblin. If I have a creative project in the works there is absolutely a mood board I’ve curated on Pinterest for it and it’s very neat to see the ideas you pin come to life as you work! I’ve always not only written music but created whole worlds surrounding it in my head that manifest as music videos, cover art, and other visuals. Pinterest is such a great place to see all of your ideas in one space and get a feel for what the atmosphere and tone of each creative project is.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I wouldn’t say there is a particular goal or mission driving my creative journey other than the fact that I know this is my life’s purpose. To create and share art, tell stories, and help people connect is all I’ve ever wanted to do and I genuinely believe the thing I’m best at in this life. In all honesty, it’s also a selfish outlet for my own thoughts, feelings, and inner world! I love when people listen to my music and see themselves in the lyrics or when they watch a performance of mine and it resonates with them, but creation is just something I’ve always loved to do and needed to do in order to feel like myself.
