We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Liv Charette a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Liv, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve always believed that big rewards come from big risks so when I decided to pursue music professionally, I packed up my entire life and moved from one country to another. I grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, and while there is a music scene there, I knew I needed to be in a major music city to truly make my dreams come true. When I made to decision to move, I had already spent several years in college in Ottawa but didn’t love the trajectory I was on. After some intense planning, I transferred to Belmont University in Nashville, TN, and I’ve called the city home for about seven years now. Since moving here, some truly incredible things have happened in my career. I’ve been able to release songs by and write with some of the best writers in the business, I’ve performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to honor Tina Turner and I’ve opened for artists like Chris Young and Gavin DeGraw. None of this would have been possible had I not decided to take the risk!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Canadian-born, Nashville-based pop singer-songwriter who grew up with big Olympic dreams. I’m a former figure skater and spent 11 years on the ice before discovering my passion for singing. After the first time I sang in front of a crowd, I traded in my skates in for a microphone.
A few of the highlights of my career have been performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to celebrate Tina Turner’s induction and launch the museum’s latest digital series and having my Tiny Mic series on TikTok called “One Word Song Challenge” featured in New York Magazine’s The Strategist.
Outside of recording and performing, I host a podcast called “She’s on the List” which features my takes on style, beauty, history, travel, cocktail culture, and much more. Most recently, I released my first music NFT collection called “Beyond Reality” with the goal of super-serving fans and bringing them exclusive experiences and content.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
For me, the way I see NFTs – specifically music NFTs – is threefold. First, NFTs serve as a powerful tool for artists to connect with fans on a deeper level. They bring back the old school fan club approach where fans get access to exclusive content as well as have a more personal connection with the artists they love and support. Second, NFTs bring the power back to artists, both creatively and financially, as they serve as a vertical for artists to actually make money on their music, as opposed to the $0.003-0.008 they make per stream. Lastly, NFTs are an additional discovery tool and allow artists to reach an entirely new audience via the web3 space.

How did you build your audience on social media?
From years of posting and growing my audience online as a musician and influencer, I’ve come to realize that you can’t take social media too seriously. The videos/TikToks that I’ve spent the least amount of time shooting and editing are the some of the ones that have gone the most viral and grown my audience tenfold. Trends are just trends – post what excites you and inspires you to create! I came up with all of my singing series on TikTok (like Tiny Mic, Karaoke, Pick A Name challenge, etc) with the hopes of bringing joy to people. Consistency and creating content that was authentic to me and my brand was when it clicked with my audience.
