We recently connected with Lisset Tresvant and have shared our conversation below.
Lisset , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking risks is my middle name. I was working a full-time job in a company I had been with for over 5 yrs. I had weekends off, a great schedule, excellent pay, and great perks like yearly bounces, vacation, time off/sick time, and all the bells and whistles. But, I was unhappy and unfulfilled in this line of work because I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I was a makeup artist outside my 9-5 doing, I would do bridal and event makeup on the weekends. I started working on a youtube tv show as a makeup artist and this sparked my passion to pursue working at a News Station. I went online seeking makeup artist positions at my local news station jobs and I found out I needed an esthetician. license. I did some research and found a school to attend and enrolled in the program. I started school and I fell in love with skin from the start . I went on to obtain my esthetcian license in Oct 2016 .
I was still working at my full time job. But, I started doing facials mobilely on the weekends. That immedently picked up and due to the demand for my service, I took a risk and rented a space in a salon suite studio in Miami Gardens . I worked in the studio on the weekends and even some evenings after work.
March 2019 I went to work on a Thursday moring at 7:58am and was written up by 8am due a mistake that coist the company money, days before. Did i mention that I was a terrible employee LOL , mainly because my focus was now on my new passion. I sat in HR as my boss told me I was liability to the omapnay and couldn’t be trusted in my position. During the conversation she repeatedly told me she would fire me next time I make a mistake of any sort. I signed the writer up with out asking any questions , I stepped outside and called my then husband at the time and told him I was going to quit my job . Naturally he asked why , I said i will tell you once I make it back home . I stepped back into the human resspurce office and told them I QUIT effective immediately . Needless to say they were shocked and couldn’t belive I had my mind up so quickly. See , I knew that this was the opportunity I was waiting for to start my own business and pursue my passion. It was a risk but i wasn’t willing to let it pass me by.
I went on and opened my first spa studio Glow Esthetics as a solo esthetcina days later, I’d already signed lease prior to quitting for a 175sqf in an office building .I wasnt in this space for a full year when moved into a bigger space 250sqf down the hall .
Fast forward, a year aftermoving in to my second space in the same building I moved again . By this time it’s Aug 2020 during the Covoid-19 pandemic and my business was still standing and doing better than even, oddly enough. Well, I took another major risk and moved into 1000sqt space and hired 2 estheticans . Crazy, yes but I told you” RISK” is my middle name LOL .
See above all I knew that I was going to be successful and that failing was not an option. Even though the risk that I was taking may seem impulsive the numbers and the way growth happened so quickly for me let me know there was a demand and I had the plan to fill it.
Lisset , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Lisset Tresvant Licensed Esthetician and owner of Glow Esthetics Spa located in South, Florida. I’m a Cuban immigrant that arrived in Miami, Florida with my parents on 8/8/1988. I’m a mother of 2 children, daughter Kyndall 10yrs old, and son Roderick 7yrs old. I love living in Miami because of the diverse culture and of course the amazing weather all year round.
I specialize in corrective skincare with a focus on ethnic skin. I treat acne and hyperpigmentation primarily as that is where I found the most help was needed. I am very knowledgeable about acne, and how it works and affects the skin. I’ve been able to come up with a method that has been proven and helped hundreds of women obtain clear skin. At Glow Esthetics Spa we provide various services like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, micro-needling, cold/hot therapy, and many more. Our goal is to always make sure that our clients (GlOWBABES as we affectionately call them) are seeing the results desired. Clients oftentimes come to me as their last resort, so the pressure is always on,
67% of people that have acne suffer from depression. I am proud to say that I have made it my business to help people with acne overcome depression. I have successfully cleared many clients and given them the confidence they thought they would never get back due to years acne and lost hope, I take the time to educate my clients about how acne works and how to make lifestyle changes to better their skin. Where, there, is no cure for acne, there are ways to keep it under control by eating healthy, using the proper products, and getting monthly facials to help minimize acne triggers.
My brand is all about empowerment. health, and education. My goal is to make my clients feel great about themselves inside and out. We do this by being authentic with our voice and message. My GLOWBABES know that our spa is a safe space for them to be themselves and relax without judgment. We take pride in making out clients feel welcomed and cared for in a space created just for them. We educate our clients on everything they need to know to make sure they feel empowered and can take care of their skin at home in between treatments.
All of the products we use are clinical esthetics-grade products that have been tested and proven to work. We also make sure that most of our products are vegan, organic, cruelty-free, and paraben free. These are components that are important to obtaining results. We only use quality products at Glow Esthetics Spa.
What sets me apart is that I have been able to give my clients hope. Usually, clients always resort to me as the last option after exhausting their dermatologist, taking different medications. using different tropical medications, and trying every home remedy recommend. When clients come to Glow Esthetic Spa they know that they are going to obtain results.
I have been able to prove myself as an industry expert in an industry where black aestheticians only make up 3%. That is something that I am very proud of. Most times black and brown women have a difficult time finding someone that looks like them to treat their skin. Inclusivity and representation matter and is needed in this industry. So I strive every day to let women who look like me know that I am in their corner when it comes to skincare.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the covid-19 pandemic, I was unable to service my clients as we were mandated to close our spa. So, I had to quickly pivot to make sure my business would make it through this hard period. I started doing online consultations with clients all over the united states. I also created and started my website and started selling skincare. This is how I was able to keep my business afloat and make sure that Glow Esthetics Spa doors would still be open.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My great customer service, my client’s results, and my love for educating my clients.
