We recently connected with Lisset Cuevas and have shared our conversation below.
Lisset, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My love for the makeup industry didn’t develop until I was in my 20’s. Don’t get me wrong, I had always liked playing with makeup, but I never imagined it would become a passion of mine, let alone make it my career. I knew I wanted to become a makeup artist after having a disastrous bridal trial in 2014. It was during my makeup inspo search that I noticed the lack of inclusivity for the everyday woman like me in the makeup industry. Plus-sized, textured, imperfect skin. It was then that I realized there are so many women like me. Are we all just settling for “ok” makeup because we do not have perfect skin or have a rounder face than most? This trial plagued me and led me to start my business a few short months later.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Lisset, a Luxury Hair & Makeup Artist and the founder and owner of Lisset Cuevas Artistry. I started Lisset Artistry with the belief that all women should be praised for being perfectly imperfect. I made it my mission to teach myself as much as I could about what products worked best with all different skin types ranging from rosacea, PCOS flared skin to mature wrinkled skin because, after all, our mommas and grandmas also deserve to feel as glam as ever. My style is ever evolving, and I pride myself in continuing to educate myself with current trends and products.
I am fortunate to work with so many amazing women providing hair and makeup services for events and large bridal parties. I specialize in skin to include textured and mature skin. My past clients and brides describe my style as elevated- natural, glowy, and trendy soft glam.
Within the past year I was able to expand my business to bring on and personally train a hairstylist and an additional makeup artist to be able to accommodate larger bridal parties. Together we travel all over the US for weddings and events to bring our trendy styles to all of our clients in the comfort of their homes and venues.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an online presence helped grow my business reaching potential clients across the country. The turning point to my growth was when I stopped trying to figure out what I thought would look good on the feed and focused on what my audience connected with.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
At the time when I started my career there was not a ton of education available, especially with a beginner budget like mine. I wish back then the power of social media education would have been where it is now. We are also in the day in age where there are so many makeup educators like myself paving the way for new artist to become successful and avoid the mistakes we made when starting out.
