Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lissa Dee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lissa, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve had the privilege of working on is my new song and music video for “Empty Bottle.”
“Empty Bottle” as a song is an emotional journey. It plays into themes of resilience, self-discovery, and healing. The lyrics are about the importance of seeking support, especially in the face of life’s adversities and the emotional battles. It’s a song that resonates with anyone who has navigated through challenging times and found the inner strength to triumph over them.
The inspiration for “Empty Bottle” stems from a deeply personal place in my own life. It’s a reflection of my experiences and a testament to my commitment to mental health awareness. It speaks to the struggles I’ve faced and the power of music in turning those struggles into something beautiful and meaningful.
The music video was filmed at the iconic speakeasy Seven Grand. The video crafts a captivating and smokey atmosphere that aligns with the song’s mood and message.
What makes this project truly meaningful to me is its potential to touch lives and inspire hope. It’s a reminder that, even in our darkest moments, there is a path towards healing and strength. “Empty Bottle” is my way of connecting with those who have faced similar struggles and providing a voice for those who may still be searching for their own.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My musical journey has been a bit of a whirlwind. It all started back in my childhood home. My mom’s love for opera and my dad’s musical family really set the stage for what was to come.
I went from singing in choirs to playing in bands, from voice lessons to piano lessons. Music has been my constant heartbeat as I grew and discovered my passion. Originally from New Jersey, I decided to take a leap and chase my dreams all the way to California.
In 2018, things really started to take off when I made my Spotify debut with ‘Ease Up.’ That was the beginning of a new chapter for me. I found my groove performing all over San Diego, fronting the band Blazing Jane. We recorded 2 albums together.
Then, in 2022, things took a bit of a turn when I teamed up with Taylin Rae, a mentor who shared her incredible music wisdom with me. That was the start of my solo adventure.
I’ve got a strong commitment to mental health awareness, and I’m really passionate about lending my voice to young teens who might be searching for their purpose. For me, every note in a song carries a message, and every lyric tells a story.
I think what makes me different is the raw authenticity I bring to every performance. Whether I’m on stage or in the studio, I pour my heart and soul into every note. My music isn’t just about melodies and lyrics; it’s a vessel for storytelling and connecting with people on a different level.
When I’m recording, you might find me in the gym. I’ve fully embraced the fitness journey and even took on a new challenge by competing in my first bodybuilding show in June.
One of the things I’m most proud of is where I’ve come from. I didn’t start this journey from a place of confidence and certainty. I came from a place of insecurity and brokenness. I’ve been able to transform not only my mind but myself into a confident, dream-seeking musician.
I’ve learned that our vulnerabilities and struggles can be the fuel that propels us to become the best version of ourselves.
When I look back at how far I’ve come, it’s not just about the music I’ve created; it’s about the personal growth and transformation that’s taken place. It’s a journey I’m proud to share with others, in the hope that it might inspire them to embark on their own path of self-discovery and transformation.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve spent several years as a Project Manager in the solar industry, a role that often placed me as one of the few women in the construction field. I thought that breaking barriers and being an inspiration to others would be rewarding, and it was, to some extent. But deep down, I always felt a longing for something more, something that would truly fulfill me.
During my time in the construction industry, I encountered sexism, misogyny, and moments of defeat. There were several times my ideas and requests for process change were shot down, only for my same suggestion to be followed up by a man’s voice and put into action. These experiences were undoubtedly challenging, but they also served as a catalyst for change. I realized that the best way to propel myself past these obstacles and live up to my fullest potential was to take a leap of faith.
So, I made the courageous decision to step away from my 9-5 routine and pursue what I’ve always wanted to do – my music. This transition not only allows me to follow my passion but also draws from the wealth of experiences I’ve gained over the years. Each challenge I’ve faced has provided valuable material for writing songs that carry a deeper message.
I’m not only committed to mental health, but also being a strong voice for women, especially those who struggle with the same issues I’ve encountered – sexism, misogyny, and the feeling of being underestimated. I’m also determined to move past any such obstacles in my life without hesitation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is when people reach out and share how my journey and my music inspire them. It’s incredibly fulfilling to hear that I’ve encouraged others to pursue their dreams, to go all in, and to be unapologetically themselves. Knowing that my experiences and music can ignite that spark of motivation and self-belief in someone else is truly heartwarming and the ultimate reward.
