We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa Yves. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa below.
Lisa, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project to date is an original play I wrote called Painting Life In Pictures- A Work Of Art. It’s a true story about the development of a young artist in her early years trying to navigate her life in a new country with an absent father and self-centered mother. She would come to have 3 siblings from her father and his second wife (my mother) in America, but her siblings (my brothers and I) would not know about her until they were well into their forties.
That artist is my sister Yochi Y. Avin. She collaborated with me on this narrative/play featuring her personal art and archived photos. The art is brought to life by 8 actors. The play is accompanied by 12 original songs written by me and performed by me with an all-female band with 10 singers. In 2024 my sister and I were awarded the Innovation Grant from Broward County, Florida which gave us the opportunity to produce the play twice at the Frank Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines, Florida, followed by an invitation to put the show on at the Arts Warehouse in Delray Beach Florida. This coming year we are bringing it to Foxboro Massachusetts January 16th & 18th 2026. The Norton Singers Theatre group will be producing it and I will act as director and musical director. Save the dates- you won’t want to miss this incredible show! Tickets will be available at the Marilyn Rodman Performing Arts Center (MRPAC) soon.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been a lifelong musician and singer for my entire life. I started playing piano at age 7 and discovered that I could sing at age 10. From then on, my entire focus was on music and learning as much as I could. I craved being in plays and performing as much as possible. Then I started writing my own songs. When I was 15 years old, I got the opportunity to perform at New York’s Improvisation in Hell’s Kitchen. I graduated from New York University with a degree in Vocal Jazz Performance. Now I mentor and teach people how to sing and more importantly how to make music a fulfilling part of their lives. I have written 3 full length musicals and released many albums of original music.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am a firm believer that the arts are necessary in the world. There is a healing aspect to art, music, theatre, self expression. My mission is to instill positive messages and truth in my work. Painting Life in Pictures, A Work of Art is an important story that I felt needed to be told. My sister grew up not being able to share in my family until I was told about her when I was forty. I feel this was true injustice to her and I wanted to right that wrong. Not only do we feature her incredible artwork, many of it color painted versions of archived black and white photos of family, we also tell her story through narrative and original songs that bring it all together into a poignant and emotional journey. Anyone who has found a sibling later in life will relate to our story. It is truly a family love story of finding and redemption.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most important lessons I learned about the arts is that collaboration is very important. When I was younger, I always thought I had to do everything by myself. I wasn’t very good at working with others. I thought being alone in my journey was my burden to bear and that no one else could create for me as well as I could. It was a hard lesson learned but I am glad I finally came around to collaboration. My best works have come out of working with others. My plays are all collaborative as well as many of my best songs. Having input from others makes for a more unique product and perspective. I am proud of the work I have done in collaboration with other creatives.
