We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa Spangler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa below.
Lisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Starting my photography business was a risk in the sense that I was concerned I would feel embarrassed. What if my friends and family didn’t think I was good enough and weren’t supportive? What if my business flopped? There are always a million what-ifs, but ultimately I took the leap and it was so worth it. Being brave can be incredibly fun and scary. I am so proud of the business I’ve built in just two years, all because I decided to put myself out there. I upgraded my camera and built a website before I ever got my first paying client.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Lisa, the owner and face behind the camera at Lisa Joy Photography. An unexpected joy of being a photographer is helping people feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable. I want you to LOVE your photos and the memories they capture.
I focus on couples and weddings, and I also work with families. My goal is to capture those little in-between moments, as well as the posed ones.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I started my photography business, I was actually working full-time in Communications. My intent was to continue working while growing my business, but within a few months, I was let go from my full-time job. This allowed me to jump in and put all of my energy into my photography business. A blessing in disguise, as they say!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I have found that it’s so important to stay focused on my own goals and business and NOT compare myself to others. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of comparison. First, there’s no lack of people in the world who need photos. Second, I’m not for everyone and that’s ok! I love being able to recommend my photographer friends when a potential client doesn’t pick me. Third, I only hinder myself and my creativity if I try to be like other photographers.
