We recently connected with Lisa Sonshine and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I really dreamed of being on broadway 🎭
I went to college for musical theatre and graduated in 2003. My whole heart wanted to move to New York and be on BROADWAY.
My aunt was taking her young children to mom and tot music groups. She was like “why Dont you do this ?”
I met Brock “broccoli “ in college. He was a rockstar. We were best friends.
In 2004 I got my first mom/tot music class and I was going to try to do it on my own. I totally chickened out and called Brock for help.
Right then and there Sonshine and Broccoli was born.
People loved us because we could both sing and perform. Our music was catchy and often people would say they felt like they were listening to “RENT”
Almost 20 years later we have been rocking out for kids and their families.
Performing has been our blood since babies. What a dream that we have made this into a very successful career
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Sonshine and Broccoli have been entertaining children and parents alike with their infectious enthusiasm and energetic pop-rock songs for the past 17 years. For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I absolutely love this question. We were just asked this question on the global morning show.
For me the most rewarding aspect is connecting with our fans in a deep and meaningful way.
We have 6 hit studio albums.
When we are performing live and I look into the audience and see kids singing every word to our songs. I literally start to cry.
I can’t believe
a) these are songs we’ve written and
b) they have touched so many people.
Our songs have purpose and meaning. We write about acceptance and love. Being true to yourself and being brave.
I am honestly inspired by our fans
Have you ever had to pivot?
This is a great question.
We started our career doing mom/tot music groups. For a good 10 years we loved loved loved it.
What was really hard was we would be rocking these big shows on big stages and Monday morning go back to sitting on a basement floor.
Call it ego or just a pivot we decided for awhile to stop taking on so many classes and really put all we got into our tours and music.
Now this is the cool part. When I had my first child Zade in 2019 we decided to start up the groups again. It was a way for me to connect with other moms and also be able to bring z with me.
So now we do both. We do it all. Whatever feels good and aligns with where we are at.
My big advice on this topic is to really stay true to what feels good. I mean let’s be real it’s still our jobs and we still do things that aren’t always aligned. But for the most part after 20 years in the bussiness we get to choose.
