Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Well first, you have to know who’s behind the brand. My name is Lisa Smith, and while I could give you my full life story, the truth is… David’s Body was born from a very specific moment, a very real feeling, and a little bit of faith.
Years ago, I stumbled into a small shop that sold body butters and sugar scrubs, and I instantly fell in love—especially with this rich chocolate fragrance. It became a staple for me and my children. We used it all the time. But as the shop grew in popularity, the prices went up, and eventually, it closed. Just like that, something we loved—and honestly had built memories around—was gone.
Then in 2013, my daughter said something that changed everything:
“Mommy, you should try to make it yourself.”
At the time, I was working in a school, and coincidentally, a parent was organizing a craft fair. That moment felt like an opportunity I couldn’t ignore. I didn’t have a perfected formula. I didn’t have a business plan. What I had was curiosity, determination, and a willingness to try.
So I did.
After a lot of trial and error—and I mean a lot—I created my first batch. And that’s when the next question came: what do I call it?
And that brings us to the heart of it all—David.
People always ask, “Who is David?”
David is my brother—Keith—who we lovingly called by his middle name. In 2011, I lost him, and that loss changed me. I knew I wanted to carry him with me in a meaningful way.
One of my favorite memories of him is how he would take a bath—he would grab every product my mother and I had and pour all of it into the tub at once. We used to joke with him all the time, telling him, “Women like their man’s skin to be soft and smell good too!” And he took that seriously—in his own way.
So when it came time to name my brand, it didn’t feel like a business decision—it felt personal. It felt necessary.
David’s Body became a way to honor him—his name, his spirit, and those small, joyful memories that still live with me.
David’s Body isn’t just about skincare—it’s about memory, emotion, and experience. It’s about creating products that people fall in love with, just like I once did… and making sure they don’t have to lose that feeling.

Lisa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who are just getting to know me, my name is Lisa Smith, and I’m the founder and creator behind David’s Body.
I didn’t come into this industry through formal training or a traditional path—I came into it through experience and emotion. What started as a personal challenge—to recreate a fragrance and product experience my family had fallen in love with—quickly turned into a passion for creating high-quality, luxurious body care products that people could truly connect with.
Through a lot of trial, error, and determination, I taught myself how to formulate whipped body butters, oils, and scrubs that not only smell incredible but also nourish the skin. Over time, that passion evolved into a business rooted in both craftsmanship and meaning.
At David’s Body, I specialize in handcrafted body soufflés, body oils, and sugar scrubs that are designed to feel indulgent while still being accessible. My signature whipped textures and scent blends are a huge part of what sets my brand apart—I focus heavily on creating fragrance experiences that are memorable, layered, and long-lasting.
But beyond the products themselves, what I really offer is an experience
.
‘d like to think that I solve a problem that a lot of customers don’t always realize they have until they find me—products that either smell amazing or perform well, but rarely both. With David’s Body, I’ve made it a priority to deliver both. My products are designed to hydrate, soften, and actually care for your skin, while also allowing you to carry a beautiful scent with you throughout the day.
Another thing that sets me apart is personalization and creativity. Whether it’s custom fragrance blends or unique concepts like my “Soufflé Studio” jars, I love giving customers the ability to feel like they’re a part of the creation process.
What I’m most proud of is the fact that I built this from the ground up—with no blueprint, just vision and persistence. I’m also incredibly proud that my brand carries meaning. David’s Body isn’t just a name—it’s a tribute, a memory, and a piece of my story that I get to share with every customer.
What I want people to know is that this brand is intentional. Every product is made with care, every scent is chosen with purpose, and every detail matters. When you support David’s Body, you’re not just buying skincare—you’re supporting a story, a legacy, and a small business that truly values its customers.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the belief that I had to do everything in order to be successful.
When I first started, I was excited, inspired, and honestly just eager to create. I bought every oil that caught my attention, every ingredient that sounded luxurious, and I followed other creators closely—trying to recreate anything that sparked my interest.
What started as a passion slowly turned into pressure. I had too many ideas, too many directions, and not enough clarity. Instead of enjoying the process, I became overwhelmed—and eventually, I stepped away from my business for three years.
That time gave me space to reflect on why I started in the first place. I realized I wasn’t building something that felt like me anymore—I was trying to keep up with everything and everyone else. So when I came back, I made a promise to myself: to slow down, to be intentional, and to create from a place of joy again.
I had to fall back in love with the process—not the pressure.
Sometimes stepping away isn’t failure—it’s how you find your way back with clarity.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the clearest examples of resilience in my journey is actually the time I stepped away from my business—and found my way back to it.
When I first started David’s Body, I was passionate and eager, but I was also overwhelmed. I was trying everything at once—different ingredients, different ideas, different directions—and over time, that lack of focus took the joy out of something I once loved.
Eventually, I stepped away from my business for three years.
At the time, it felt like I had failed. Like I had started something meaningful and couldn’t sustain it. But looking back, that wasn’t the end of my story—it was a necessary pause.
What makes that experience a story of resilience is the decision to come back.
Coming back meant facing my doubts, rebuilding my confidence, and starting again—this time with more clarity, intention, and discipline.
Resilience, for me, wasn’t about pushing through nonstop. It was about allowing myself to pause when needed, and having the courage to begin again.
