We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa Small. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa below.
Hi Lisa, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Early in 2020, our dad was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer out of the blue. One day he was fine and the next he was admitted to the hospital for stroke symptoms caused by large brain mets. He passed away in November 2020 after a courageous fight leaving me questioning many things.
In order to make sense of such a significant loss, and more importantly to uphold the legacy of a man who dedicated his entire life to elevating his community and prioritized family, I began to form the idea of Habitual Growth with my brother (Nate). We formulated a process – built from the decades of dedication, hard work and intentional action learned from our father – into the Habitual Growth process. From there, we connected with friends who were interested in personal and professional development and equally had a desire to leave a positive impact on the world, and began to trial the process each day through Essential Actions lists. In 2022, we understood that we had identified a process which drove positive and lasting change through setting specific and actionable goals, identifying daily intentional actions and building positive habits and formally incorporated our company, Habitual Growth.
Software development followed shortly, and the beta version of the mobile application launched in June 2023. We continue to inspire, motivate and grow through a collective focus that we have untapped potential inside and, when unlocked, we can positively impact our lives, our families, our friends and our communities.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Habitual Growth is a passion project built from a legacy of an individual who left a lasting, positive impact on their family, friends and community. Habitual Growth’s mission is to grow 5 million lives by 2027 – a lofty goal and one that we’re hyper-focused on achieving.
What sets us apart is our customizability to each individual’s journey and our access to the founders. I, and Nate, genuinely want our Habitual Growth community to be successful and actively work to personalize all interactions. In addition, we live our lives by example and run multiple challenges to build positive habits and make changes one day at a time.
Habitual Growth is different – we were built from a place of the utmost good intention and work tirelessly with our community, meeting them where they’re at and building roadmaps to their success. We develop physical and mental challenges to incite growth within our users and personalize development plans for individuals and businesses.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My co-founder and business partner is my brother. Growing up, we had a normal sibling relationship filled with competitive challenges, pushing boundaries and arguing over who was the favorite child. My brother used to throw my Barbie dolls up into the basketball net so I couldn’t reach them and refuse to do chores when I was responsible for babysitting my siblings.
Fast forward, in our adult lives we individually went through significant personal challenges from which we identified our need and love for personal growth and development. Bonding closer during our father’s end of life journey provided a common need and dedication to honor him.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2016, at the age of 36, I was laid off for the first time and it shook me to my core. I had always taken my career seriously – working less while I raised 3 young children and moving into a full-time professional phase. What impacted me the most was that I felt like I didn’t have transferable skills. A pharmacist by schooling and experience, while an amazing profession, did not prepare me for the abundance of skills needed to pivot in the corporate business world. It was in that moment that I vowed that I would build skills and experience through entrepreneurship to elevate confidence and impact in any arena – corporate or small business.
