Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Sheets
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out as a young person being very interested in music and art. Along the way I pursued these topics in school and earned degrees in them. I also studied and sometimes worked in fields incorporating other subjects, including psychology, vintage doll collecting, and American Sign Language.
Throughout my life I considered the prospect of being a fine artist to be a very long-term project. I have been open to wearing several hats at once in my life while keeping my focus on pursuing art as a lifetime passion and calling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One challenge along the way is deciding whether you will pursue being an employee or whether you will strike out on your own and work as an independent contractor or own your own business. Sometimes being an employee feels like it would be a more stable way to go, but not always! There have certainly been obstacles in my life, particularly economic downturns and changes in the market that make it challenging to have financial stability. Another recent challenge for artists is the speedy development of a variety of technologies. Some of these things are very interesting to artists to use as tools, but technology like AI right now is developing so quickly that it can be difficult at times to keep up.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Artspawn Studios?
One of the challenges that comes with art making is finding a place to do your work where you can focus and have the space and environment to develop your art. That was one thing that inspired my husband and I to create Artspawn Studios, which is a Studio complex that includes other artists in our community. We started about 25 years ago, and it now includes a shared printing press facility in addition to studios. It is an ongoing project but it has been very rewarding and it is a way of building Community amongst other local artists so that we are not working in isolation.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People might not know that I trained as a classical flute player in my teens and early twenties, and played piccolo in a couple orchestras when I was young. Because of the pandemic I stopped playing and I’m not sure when I will start up again.
