We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Serrato, Amanda Hampton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa Serrato, Amanda Hampton, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Amanda and I (Lisa) both were introduced by the idea of crafting from a long time friend of ours. Soon after, our interest were peaked and we just starting doing research on how to craft and practiced a lot. I don’t think there is anyway we could have sped up the learning process since our type of crafting takes time and has different steps to make sure everything is done correctly and efficiently. The type of skill that is essential is patience. There’s a lot of trial and error that comes along with our crafting and it takes patience to push through and keep going. The only obstacle that has stood in the way is time. We both work full time jobs and we have to set time aside to craft. We are always willing to learn more and gather new ideas.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Amanda and I are two artists collaborating as one. We bounce our ideas off each other. Amanda and I both got into crafting 4 years ago from our long time friend who also crafts. She introduced crocheting and clay jewelry making to the both of us. When we first started, we attended a small anime convention with our friend who was nice enough to allow us to put some of our new crafts on her table to sell. Amanda and I liked the environment and the crowd and thought this was something we could see ourselves doing. From there we just continue practicing on our own to soon make the crafts we make today and became Twisty Loop Creations. What sets us apart from others is that you don’t see a lot of other artists who have crochet or clay jewelry when we attend conventions. Sometimes we are the only ones with that art style and it allows people to see what we have that’s different from the rest. We like showing our followers or potential customers that our art is handmade, one at a time. Sometimes I am actively crocheting when talking with people at conventions or Amanda is finishing up earrings to place for sale. We noticed that people like to see the work that gets put into the things we make. Amanda and I are most proud of the improvement that we’ve had. We have changed a lot throughout the years and finally have a nice routine of everything and how to set up our display table when we attend conventions. The majority of our work is meant for conventions whether it’s anime, comic or horror related. We attend different conventions to allow our work to be seen by the people that we know will appreciate it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect about being an artist is seeing the some of our past customers return to show us that they’re wearing the jewelry we made or bringing their family and friends to see our table of all the crafts we have. It just brings us joy to see how happy or impressed people are when looking at our art.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
All of our artwork does take time, patience and most non creatives do understand that. There are a few that we hear make comments about something being too expensive when it shouldn’t be or making faces when they do hear a price. It can take a toll on us mentally. Sometimes it’s also a fear of our art not selling. We occasionally make new crafts and hope people with like what we make. Non creatives have to realize that we want to share our work with them, but also know the time and work it takes to make something.
