We recently connected with Lisa Scala and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I have custom made several one of a kind remembrance pieces for clients throughout my career. These memorial jewelry designs incorporate personal signs from their loved ones as well as meaningful gemstones. This personalized layer is to help bring them comfort and to honor the person who has passed. Making these pieces is such an honor and I feel like it is my calling. One of the stories that stands out for me is the women who asked for a necklace to commemorate her son. She described him as fun and fiery! I ended up setting a fire opal on sterling elongated heart shape with copper details on the front and a copper butterfly on the the back. The butterfly symbol came to us in such an amazing way. She had create a quilt square with all of the things that reminded her of her son including an orange butterfly. That day it was decided that this would be perfect for this necklace! Fifteen minutes after she had left my gallery a friend of mine came in and said “You need to come outside and see this!” “It’s the rare copper butterfly!” _B “Wait what! Are you kidding me!!!” _Me. I called the client right away and we were in tears, happy tears. So perfect!!!

Lisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Designs to Lift Your Soul!
MY STORY
Designed with Soulful Intention! That’s my motto, and it’s what creating jewelry has always meant to me.
I have been designing and metalsmithing for over 30 years, taking pride in incorporating healing and spirituality into all my work. My designs are inspired by the subtle beauty all around us as well as our strength within. I believe that every woman is a goddess and should be treated as such. On a personal level, I am influenced by spiritual connection, gifts from mother earth as well as other fine art.
My journey began when I was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child. I found solace in art, which, amid my challenges, made sense to me. Colors and designs filled my mind, pouring onto the page and out of the gemstones. When I came to realize that not everyone can see the world as I do, I saw that dyslexia was actually my creative superpower!
I dove into all thing’s art—sculpture, painting, jewelry, metalsmithing, design—and earned a degree in jewelry and metalsmithing at Maine College of Art. My confidence grew, and the possibilities unfolded.
Today I am a successful businesswoman with my own gallery in Georgetown, Massachusetts. I’ve received awards from arts organizations and have my jewelry featured at high-end galleries across the US. I also run an apprenticeship program for aspiring jewelers. I own my dyslexia and make it work for me.
MY DESIGN PROCESS
Making jewelry is an expression of my whole self. My designs come subconsciously, as in a dream. I can often see the finished product before I’ve even started. Other times, I find a compelling gemstone and design around it.
I often use an old-school approach, drawing my designs with pencil and paper, noting the metals, gemstones, sizing and possible design variations. Some of my ideas expand into themed collections, while others become one-of-a-kind pieces.
Nature and spirituality inform everything I do. The shape of a leaf, the cut of a stone or a particular gemstone’s healing power spark my imagination and drive my creative process.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Besides creating high quality well designed jewelry, I want there to be a much deeper meaning for the wearing and this is why I incorporate healing gemstones and symbols that are positive reminders to my clients.
Helping people to feel good about themselves, feel seen, heard and part of something bigger is part of the atmosphere I try to create in my gallery. I want them to feel great about how they look and feel in my pieces.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
